I find this to be the case with every Wilco record - YHF and AGIB still haven't hit their ceiling with me.tragabigzanda wrote:I’m still coming around on TWL, but it’s gradually getting better instead of worse, so I’ll probably get this

Re: wilco
Here's my thing with Wilco, driven largely by having just listened to this new summer whatever EP. They are 100% content to have a conventional rhythm section on song after song and yet refuse to just play their damn guitars like guitars anymore. A Ghost Is Born is a masterpiece and it's like the band immediately pulled half its teeth after that. They tapped into some saccharine supply (sonicly speaking) and only occasionally reach for the crayons in the box with which they are truly exceptionally gifted (Impossible Germany, Art of Almost, Rising Red Lung, Random Name Generator come to mind). When I'm least interested in what Wilco's doing, I really think it's because they're trying to give Pat Sansone and Mikael Jorgenson enough to do and you get this piano/synth-heavy bubblegum gloom with the guitars way in the background. I mean, I'm depressed enough on my own, I don't need to carry Jeff Tweedy's baggage, too. Not if he's not going to bring any vigor.
Maybe Spiders (Kidsmoke) just used it all up.

Re: wilco
Annihilation was the best, but that’s not saying much. You mentioned previously these were from the last album sessions, and definitely feels like cast offs fromtragabigzanda wrote:I've been a staunch defender of pretty much every Wilco record (I'm still mixed on The Whole Love). But this EP is pretty forgettable. I like Annihilation ok.
