I checked out the new Kasey Musgraves album this morning, Deeper Well. I don't know if the album is one of the best of 2024 as a whole, but the first 3 songs that kick it off are excellent. I'm not normally a big fan of the alt-country twangy female stuff, but this ain't bad at all.

Cardinal has been getting solid rotation on the radio station I tune in to, haven't given the whole album a spin yet but I think Joe was a fan here as well.

FJM has been posting clips on social. No actual announcement as of yet.

I have high expectations for the Lenderman album.

Yeah the FJM and Amyl records aren't announced but they're pretty likely to come out over the next six months.

I really enjoy almost everything I have heard from Public Service Broadcasting. I enjoy the beats and the quirkiness of the recordings they use. They are releasing a new album in October apparently.

Nice -- his album from a few years ago with Pharaoh Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra is amazing, probably my favorite album from that year. I need to listen to that again. I like the track shared in the article -- perhaps a bit less than the stuff on the album with Pharaoh, but admittedly that one has elements more naturally in my wheelhouse.

This posthumous live album from Ron Miles (and his esteemed colleagues) -- released this year, recorded 2011 -- has been taking up a lot of my air space lately:

New Floating Points album out 9/13. Tentatively a big from me, though I’m disappointed to hear he’s stepping back from the classical and jazz elements that have been focal points of his last couple albums.

The long serving afternoon show host of the radio station I listen to in the car recently quit to go onto other things. I had a love hate relationship with the dude.

He was earnest AF and concerned with mental health and well being, had great taste in tunes and would randomly do these "resets" where I could find myself in peak hour traffic listening to some gorgeous ambient tune, suddenly my usual simmering road rage gone for the moment.

He would just as randomly throw in a "rave cave" tune as well, with Underworld or The Prodigy blaring as I tailgate the EV in front.

His last show he chose to sign off with Silhouettes I, II & III. It was choice.

This is lovely, I'll spin the whole thing this afternoon. The more I dig into Frisell, the more I find there's a particular...playful kindness...that runs throughout his works, and generally seems to be lacking from any other modern jazz I hear (where playfulness is often supplanted by showmanship, and kindness by politeness, which together translates to my ears as conceited blandness).

Over the past few years I've stumbled, somewhat unintentionally, into a bunch of albums that feature Frisell as a sideman (Ron Miles, Charles Lloyd, Paul Motian, Gregoire Maret, Jan Garbarek), and I think one really discerns the quality you describle from his playing in those settings, even more so than on his own records (though I can certainly hear what you are describing there too). The way he supports and gives space to other musicians is so generous and sympathetic (again, sometimes even on his own records, at times to a fault!), elevating their contributions while sacrificing none of what makes his own playing unique. He has such a distinct sound that you'd think having his signature all over so many records would get tiresome, but it doesn't at all -- it all just feels like it has such an inherent goodness to it.
