would it fair to say Lightning bolt was kind of a try for a No Code II? or is that a mischaracteriastion of it?

i kinda feel like that's what they were going for with that one.

Very interesting change in position from what Stone was saying only a few months ago, e.g. that he can’t wait to go straight back into making another record with Wotman the same way.

In a new interview with NME, when posed the question as to whether he sees “Dark Matter” as a career high, Gossard replied:

“I wouldn’t say that. I think it will end up being an impactful record – looking back at some point this record will be significant. Working with [producer] Andrew Watt was effective for us. In a sense, he was going back in time and saying, ‘You did this so well, just do this’. It makes me think ‘OK, we did that, now what’s the opposite of that? Let’s lean in the other direction’.”

are they able to make such an album of exploratory songs at this stage?
DM and gigaton songs feel very intentional and nailed down kind of

Going back to Stone's quote:

I think you can see some commonality in that approach with the records Wotman produced for the Stones, Ozzy etc. - it's an attempt to identify the hallmarks of the most readily digestible and commercially successful version of the artist, boil those things down to their bare essence and push a few more drops out of the same magic sauce.

Waiting for Stevie feels like the boldest example of that on DM, which I think (along with Wotman's heavy involvement in its creation) is one of the reasons it leaves such a sour taste in the mouth for me.

If a few more months of reflection has got Stone feeling like it's time to get back to meandering and unfocused weirdness, I'm all ears.

I read it as subtle push back on Eddie's leadership.

We all like different things, and the things Stone seams to like on the album are more lively unfocused things. He probably really is proud of the songs. That seams obvious he flat out gushes about Wont Tell and React Respond.
He probably knows that they can take away many things from that session that worked, and transpose that to a different session and yes maybe even producer
I mean the opposite of Dark Matter would be Something like Tusk or Combat Rock for example.
I think working quickly in the same room is the big take away.
Maybe returning to Shangri-la? Banging out a collection of spritz folkers and smalzy punkers would be in order.
