Re: Waiting For Stevie
The other day it occurred to me that this would be amazing on a film soundtrack.

Ed goes a little bit too hard on this throughout. He's good, but we all know Matt is the MVP.

So far this song is the earworm of this record for me. It's the one I *need* to hear every now and then.

Re: Waiting For Stevie
I heard Jeff introduce this song on SiriusXM the other day. He talked about how he never expected Pearl Jam to venture into this territory of shoegaze/My Bloody Valentine genre. I can definitely hear the similarities but never thought about it before he mentioned it.

it's fascinating to hear what they get out of their music. Like Stone figuring that Pilate would be a hit (unless he was joking)

Re: Waiting For Stevie
It's the bassline and wall of guitars. If Rachel of Slowdive was singing lead, it would make sense even more. The drums though are way too old school rock. They get in the way of any shoegaze comparison in my opinion.

Re: Waiting For Stevie
there is a droney groove to it, despite the old school riff at its core

If Jeff says it’s shoegaze, it’s shoegaze!

I can (kind of) hear the link to the rockier side of shoegaze, like Ride or Swervedriver.

Re: Waiting For Stevie
Not sure if this comparison has been made, but Don Henley's "The Heart of the Matter" has a very similar intro and even semi-bridge-type-thing. Pearl Jam does it a little different, and way better, but check out the opening of the song and then if you don't want to listen to the whole thing (I'll admit it, I do- I like Don Henley and dig this song), skip ahead to the 1:48 mark to see the "bridge" where it comes back again with a decidedly less-Matt-Cameron drums flair:

Re: Waiting For Stevie
i hear the similarities too. i wonder if its a common musical phrase or just coincidence.
i think the biggest difference is that the don henley song, and don henley in general, are a complete pile of shit. whereas eddie vedder is one of the best rnr singers ever and WFS is like a return to glory vocally.
