Re: Crucify the Insincere: A Smashing Pumpkins Thread
I haven't listened seriously to any reunion-era Pumpkins except for Zeitgeist and the acoustic EP that followed it. I know Zeitgeist isn't a beloved album but I actually liked it a lot, and played it a ton during the summer of 2007. Any suggestions for where to start on the stuff that's come since? I feel like I could use a little new Pumpkins in my life.

Re: Crucify the Insincere: A Smashing Pumpkins Thread
Oh boy. Well I'll give you my two favorite songs. The albums are very patchy.
I loved this song immediately, but I loved it even more after hearing Billy explain that it was essentially his take on a sea shanty. One-two-three, one-two-three. Very fucking cool. He has said that he "didn't completely nail" this song, and I would have to assume he's alluding to the bridge. It's not bad, it's just not as incredible as the rest. Still, one of the best post-2000 SP tunes.
This is a song that appears to be confused sonically, but gets by on the beauty of the arrangement. And Billy's lyrics are some of the best he's written since Mellon Collie. Seriously, this destroyed me on first listen. It's so beautiful.
Should I hope to be the light you'd deny
Could I scratch the paint
To where you must shine
Also, I love Katie Cole, so her backing vocals are a very welcome addition.
I cannot recommend a full album, but I might compile a playlist.

Funny, Zeitgeist is the last album I have of theirs in either lossless or lossy formats. I saw two shows that tour as well Boston, which was fantastic and Uncasville, which was atrocious.Kevin Davis wrote:I haven't listened seriously to any reunion-era Pumpkins except for Zeitgeist and the acoustic EP that followed it. Five (soon to be six) albums and three EPs since then it seems, looks like I have some listening to do.

well, i love Zeitgeist a lot. After that i come and go with different stuff, sometimes i come back to a certain song and i love it and that goes on.
I do like a lot most of the stuff from Atum, a lot from Cyr and Shiny and singles like GLOW or Superchrist or Gossamer.
I cant listen to Oceania these days. Its the only one i dont really care to listen, but i know thats going to change because it always does.

Re: Crucify the Insincere: A Smashing Pumpkins Thread
Thanks for those recommendations, Ello — I liked them both quite a bit. When you said sea shanty I was expecting something folky; I liked that it was something kind of metallic and synthy-sounding, just with that 1-2-3 rhythm. And the other one is lovely. Billy’s voice just takes me somewhere else — instant salve.
But is it wrong to say that in recent-ish years the SP songbook has experienced a proliferation of songs that sound like they were named after RPG characters?

It's really gotten out of hand, but let's not forget our girls Tristessa and Starla.Kevin Davis wrote:But is it wrong to say that in recent-ish years the SP songbook has experienced a proliferation of songs that sound like they were named after RPG characters?
