I liked the idea that the Targaryens have been wrong this whole time and dragons choose, but I'm not sure that is what they are doing. They could just being pulling an Anakin/Acolyte with Jon Snow... but I have not read the books this is based on.

The rider seasmoke chose is not a blood relative of a Targaryen though, at least so far as the story has revealed. He's a bastard, like Jon Snow. Who is able to ride a dragon, like Jon Snow. So either he's a secret Targaryen, like Jon Snow, or they have been wrong about the bloodline requirement.

It isn’t a requirement to be Targaryen, just of Valyrian descent, which houses Velaryon and Celtigar are as well

are the latter two fams wiped out by GoT?
