Beyond Buena Vista: The tropical dance music thread

Post by Jorge »

Salsa, mambo, merengue, cumbia, bachata, etc. One of my biggest musical interests that I never chat about on RM.
Anyone here into this stuff?

Today I've been listening to this great compilation of mid-60s recordings by Joe Cuba Sextet with Cheo Feliciano on vocals: https://open.spotify.com/album/25qLstFw ... ykYX611_Qw

Nice Jorge. I'm not educated enough to tell the difference between the genres you listed, but if I may be so bold, I'd put calypso up there...
I was hardly ever exposed to calypso music, except for Harry Belafonte. But I've been discovering that calypso hits my ear in a very good way.

Recommended listen: Charlie Halloran

Nice. And calypso is a style that I'm fully unfamiliar with, so this works out well

This is a tremendous live album, great performances, blurring the line between salsa and Latin jazz: https://open.spotify.com/album/3wXiqO02 ... 0M1tfp0j0A

Larry Harlow was the first piano player for Fania All-Stars, a legendary salsa ensemble

I was sent this CD to review back in the mid-2000's and I have had this song stuck in my head ever since:

That sounds like a lot of the romantic salsa I grew up hearing in Colombia. I really like that sound, it's very accessible and upbeat but also melancholy. And the horn arrangements are always so cool.

This is my favorite song in that style, I have a strong sentimental attachment to this tune:

Geordie Greep, formerly of Black Midi, with a stunning, jazzy samba rock:

I know Ibrahim Ferrer is Buena Vista SC adjacent, but I love his voice so much.
