Why is it weird, though? Attention spans are shorter than ever and yet we have Zack Snyder cuts of everything now. I just personally like a 10-11 song album between 40-50 minutes and find Gigaton a little bloated. I also love b-sides on singles. Those, of course, open the topic of should it have been on the album and what should it have replaced, which is essentially the same discussion, but b-sides were always so exciting. I miss those and soundtrack and benefit only songs so much, and now it’d be easy and accessible. Who else bought the Go single, the Chicago Cab soundtrack, and Sweet Relief? What a time to be alive! Imagine Retrograde or Buckle Up as the b-side to Dance. I think I’d appreciate them more.McParadigm wrote:It’s always weird to me how 80% of the fan discussions on this webzone boil down to “which songs by a band I like would I get rid of”

bsides probably get a disproportionate amount of attention (as do pre-release singles) just because they arent sharing focus with 10+ other songs

Re: Gigaton: Official album thread
Usually when I am thinking about what songs to cut, I am not thinking about which ones to strike from existence entirely, just which ones to remove from the main track sequence and (theoretically) make available somewhere else. Holistically, more is more and I want it all, and then some.
And I'm with you, daft -- I miss the CD single, soundtrack, compilation, etc. days. So many fond memories of that weird, inconvenient, financially impractical search -- though if forced to choose, I'm glad that that era coincided with my youth, when I had limitless energy and fewer financial responsibilities, and the "sit on your rear end and click a button" era is happening now.

While i love how listening to an album on vinyl forces you to actually listen to it and not skip songs, kinda like going to see a movie to the theatre, i also love making comps or listening to soundtracks or whatever.

After a few months, I'm ready to say that Gigaton is unquestionably better than DM.

I've been trying to hold on to this belief (though not quite at the level of conviction of "unquestionably"), but I've also only been brave enough to listen to Gigaton once since Dark Matter came out. That single listen left me on the fence about which is better, but I'm not sure Gigaton can survive another side-by-side comparison.Leatherhead wrote:After a few months, I'm ready to say that Gigaton is better than DM.

I think that's sort of the point with Gigaton.tragabigzanda wrote:KD once described Radiohead’s albums as feeling “overworked.” I thought that was very astute.
I find both of these albums to feel incredibly laborious. Probably only Never Destination and Something Special hint at the loose, organic interplay of their earlier efforts. Maybe Setting Sun too.
Both of these albums make me feel tired.

'Alright' would work in the 2-4 range after a recognizable opener. Or maybe in the middle after a bunch of fast songs. I don't think its an encore song. I listened to it live yesterday and it sounded great.

This is a spot-on description of what this song feels like to me. Not a fan at all.tragabigzanda wrote:It's like influencer spiritualism in song form.
Honestly I feel the same way about "Seven O'Clock" for the most part.
