Post Random Pearl Jam-Related Thoughts You Have

My son recently had a 2,500km solo drive and I took the opportunity to make him a 4 disc, 12 songs per disc PJ mixer, in mostly chronological order. I chose my own personal favourite songs, but with a mind to what he would enjoy as well, mixing studio tracks with some fave live versions as well.

Distilling my PJ fandom to 4 lots of 12 songs was an interesting process, but I'm very happy with the resulting 4 disc set that I have been spinning quite a bit of late.

More importantly, did he actually listen to it? Or was this one of those, "Oh sure, thanks dad" moments where the discs went out the window once he left the driveway and he blasted Pitbull to stay awake?

I'll post the tracklists when I'm at my pc tomorrow, but yes, he did listen. He was solo driving and wanted to just get there, so essentially drove for 30 hours which included 2 3 hour naps. He told me they helped him through a late night stint, but he might be full of it!

He has listened to a bit of PJ over the years and is coming with us to see them as a fam in November, so it was kinda homework for him.

Apparently he also enjoyed some of the other stuff on the USB I gave him, specifically Four Tet and a sweet live Powderfinger mix I made years ago. Worryingly he isn't into Midnight Oil though.

I don’t think I’ve listened to a full show live PJ boot since the Moline show from 2014, and probably listened to it in like 2016 at the most recent.

I have several unclaimed boot codes in my 10C account and I really have no desire to use them.

they got a very serious cease and desist letter from Pearl Jam llc and so have changed their name to Legal Jam

Random thought re: Eddie Vedder's singing.

His early to middle sound relied very much on pushing anger through (especially Vitalogy and the harder songs on No Code and Yield [Habit, Evoli]ution]). And, much like the heart, the vocal chords cannot remain angry and healthy long term. So he doesn't bring the same emotion to angry songs that kind of need that emotion to sound true to their original incarnation.

I wonder if he'd do well to reimagine those angry songs the way Johnny Cash (via Rick Rubin) re-imagined Nine Inch Nails. Sing them lower and weary. Use his strongest vocal register. And challenge Mike and Stone to still make them interesting and electric but in a way that embeds that kind of vocal. There's precedent in the recent U2 re-recordings, though I don't care for many of those. But I like Pearl Jam better as a band and think they could really make it interesting.

Brother The Cloud is a good example of a song that could have come out at 1994 or so and Ed sounds good and angry enough like those days.

Good Or Evil too, it has this 1996 quality voice in it.

I think Ed had a deep dive in 2008 but recover from it really good in 2009 and then he has been getting better. I do wish he quit smoking for christ sake, and also more acoustic songs in his deep baritone could be awesome

I love Good and Evil, one of Ed’s best songs in the last 20 years. Four stars.

I’ll never get the love for Brother the Cloud. Corny verse with an enjoyable but overly familiar chorus. 2.5 stars.

Fully agree on Good and Evil. Also mostly on Brother the Cloud…the verse and chorus felt like I was listening to a song I’d already worn myself out on, even on play #1. But hoo boy do I love the bridge and outtro.

Brother the cloud is also one that, while
classicall sounding, felt overly familiar.

Invincible, Try, In the Dark, and Mrs Mills were my top standouts
