This was an unexpected treat in my YT feed today:

There's some really interesting stuff going on in 1996. In many respects, it's the high point of the Jack Irons-era Pearl Jam. They're playing the brand new songs off No Code and it feels like the band are still cloaked in some of the magic from working with Neil the year before. Firmly in their mid 90s introspective period, there's a very attractive sense of solemnity that's quite unique for an arena rock band.

Notwithstanding, there's no official boots and very little pro-shot footage. Hopefully near the front of the queue for a future Vault release.

Thanks for sharing. 96 by far is my favorite year of touring. For one it's the first time I saw them at Merriweather. It was definitely a time of transition and I absolutely loved No Code and Jack's drumming was incredible. He owned In My Tree! I agree I'd love to see a Vault release for 96. How has Berlin never been a released?!

I live in a very pro-PJ area that plays them all the time on the radio. When I was growing up they had PJ's cover of this song in heavy rotation after the 2000 tour. I just assumed at the time it was a big hit for them everywhere without realizing that I was fortunate the stations here just love to play Pearl Jam.

This was awesome. What a contrast between this Eddie and the Eddie of today. I try not to miss the '90's too much but sometimes I really do.

A '96 Vault release is pretty much the only thing on my PJ wishlist these days.

great version but he is already adding that over-forced "fucking trip" in towards the end. God I hate that.

I wonder if there's anyone besides Ed who doesn't hate that. It's so dumb. It's not just a "big fucking trip", it's an "ALL big fucking trip". What does that even mean!

Love that video, though.

and it's not just the "ALL big fucking trip," but him screaming it (which he's been doing for about 25 years now). ruiner.

The "big fucking trip" has absolutely zero impact on my enjoyment of the song.

i think my favorite lyric change is 'in hiding' when he changes "they were upside down" to "i was trippin balls". so THAT'S what the song is about! lol

One I liked is when Ed sang 'Room at the Top' during the Oscars. He changed:

"Yeah, like they do in those things on TV"

to

"Yeah, like they do in those things in the movies"

It's subtle but it sounds better and works better regardless of context. Then once you throw in the actual context it's way better.

All of Eddie's curse word and/or drug reference additions are awful -- a dancing-bear routine to get cheap, easy applause. But this version of "Present Tense" is still great. I just love how controlled and private the performances felt in those days.

No, I don't think that is a drug reference. What I was referring to was the line warehouse referenced, where he changes "I was upside down" to "I was tripping balls." Sometimes he changes it to "I was high as hell." Sometimes he changes "had a smoke in a tree" to "had a joint in a tree." Those are the kinds of things I was talking about.
