Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Speed is a nearly perfect action movie, isn't it? I hadn't watched it since I was a kid and kind of wrote it off as 90s shlock but I just gave it a watch and was thoroughly impressed by about 80% of it. The fight atop the subway train is the only part where the filmmaking really lets it down. Everything else is so well executed even when it's being extremely stupid

That film is gold.

I'm not into action movies but Speed is one of the rare exceptions

The whole high-octane-but-contained action thrill ride thing was well established before Speed in movies like Die Hard, Runaway Train, and the like. These are also similarly structured

I don’t think it felt formulaic at that time at all; it seemed to be wildly successful specifically because it invented a new formula, which was then ceaselessly regurgitated. But the core concept was very novel, and the script was very punchy.

Obviously, 14 year old me, who is an expert on action films from the 80s and 90s, disagrees.
