It’s a corporation.dimejinky99 wrote:No. They’re making a huge mistake giving in to a rabid toxic and very organised group who have been harrassing all the cast in all the various releases, and other fans of the franchise, since as far back as John Boyega popped up in a trailer as a black stormtrooper.
And especially every female or POC cast member since.
The “it bad because woke” comments on social media were never as omnipresent as the legitimate complaints about pacing, story, and characterization were….and many of those were coming from Star Wars fans.
I’m sorry that something you enjoyed went away. That always sucks. But the problem wasn’t that racists didn’t like this show. It was people. People didn’t like this show. So many of them that the obvious business decision was made.
'dreamworld' he says. yeah i havent been fully immersed in the star wars fandom since before 2015, and watched, often in horror (and reported here about it countless times) as exactly this stuff has been happening. I must have dreamed all that. It'll also be news to people like Kelly Marie Tran and most of her cast mates. We 'dreamed all that abuse lads. Didn't happen'.
For the record, i didnt enjoy the show. But you missed that point and the main one here. Like it or not the perception obviously is, that Disney have bowed to the assholes, did you not read the pieces from the major publications Ive posted above? Forbes has now also published a similar article.
And as the perception is theyve bowed to such pressure, theyre fucked forever more if they try to get any new talent or creators in, and fucked for getting the majority of people to actually watch it. It isn't a perception. They have bowed to the assholes.
The Asian members in this show particularly, brought in to try and make star wars more attractive to Asian markets (for Asian, read China) and now that's fucked.
Now we just have another handy culture war topic people like Bi and Burt can infest and cream themselves over as they think it's all going their way.

Re: Star Wars: Acolyte
Saying “Disney didn’t cancel this show because of bigotry” is not the same as saying “there was no bigotry directed at this show,” dime.
By all accounts, Star Wars has not given Disney the returns it expected. In 2012 it had marvel-sized ambitions and a laundry list of upcoming movie announcements. Today, it is perhaps one or two box office failures away from being permanently relegated to television. The streaming shows have been occasionally but not consistently successful. This show in particular had a budget that can only be justified by massive audience numbers. It did not come close to achieving those numbers.
You just cannot get the suits to go along with spending hundreds of millions of dollars to draw an audience this size, man. You can’t. It’s not worth it, according to the only metric that matters to them. Even if there was no bigotry in the world, those numbers would still be those numbers.

It's strange though. There's a few accounts on these SW threads last few years, and i cant remember them ever commenting on the series/ film or whats going on within.
They only ever comment of the drama around it. i'm goin searching post histories

Did have an interesting 20 minutes looking through your star wars posts though, and its fair to say your whole thing is about shitting on the whole of it rather than the current thing. And you were really only excited about the current thing, if there was a culture war argument going on around it. I find that strange but telling.
There were too many to pick but this sums it up. Did they fire you way back, or something else?

Re: Star Wars: Acolyte
I think it's strange that more people don't find culture and struggles for culture as fascinating as I do, but whatever.
Having seen how the sausage is made, I am more interested in the behind-the-scenes decision making of Disney execs than the terrible schlock they've been putting out. The final products in themselves aren't very interesting for me to talk about.
I could spend all day picking apart terrible plot and character decisions the creators make in a given episode, but I don't think you really want that, and there are plenty of people who do that already. I really don't think it's a great idea for me to talk about how the lightsaber of Klandu Meteorsmasher is the wrong color or whatever. And hatewatching isn't for me (there are plenty of people who do that, too).

Amandla Stenberg speaks on #TheAcolyte getting canceled
“It’s not a huge shock for me [that it was canceled]. Of course, I live in the bubble of my own reality but for those who aren’t aware there has been a rampage of vitriol that we have faced since the show was even announced ... when it was still just a concept and no one had even seen it. That’s when we started experiencing a rampage of hyper-conservative bigotry and vitriol, prejudice, hatred, and hateful language towards us ... this really affected me when I first got the job because it’s just not something, even though I anticipated it happening, it’s not something you can fully understand what it feels like until it’s happening to you.”
“It has been an incredible honor and dream for me to be in this universe ... And I just want to let those people know out there who supported us in that way, and supported us vocally in the face of all of the vitriol that we received, and the kind of the targeted attack I would say we received by the alt-right, just that you were deeply loved and appreciated, and it made this job all the worthwhile for me"
"And I have to thank Lesyle Headland ... I just fucking love that bitch ... one of the best people in the world ... she's so incredibly talented and unique ... I will love this experience with her forever"

Barbie suffered through an extremely loud conservative backlash, yet it was a huge success. And if the same group of people decided to make Barbie 2 tomorrow, it would also make hundreds of millions of dollars.
More recently, the culture warriors decided to get all wound up about The Boys. Conservatives declared the show woke and over, and review bombed it. Its viewership went up 20%.
It doesn’t matter that a bunch of shitheads complain about shithead things, dime. It only matters if enough people show up to watch your show.

Re: Star Wars: Acolyte
- There are people spamming the N word in their mentions I'm sure.
- There are also people criticizing these shows for - among other things - wokeness related reasons.
- Then there is a third group criticizing the shows for other reasons.
I'm never sure what group that defenders are talking about when they claim to be victims of racism. In someone like Dime's case, they pretty clearly lump all three groups into the racist/alt-right monster category. Others only lump the first two groups (sometimes somewhat fairly, but usually not at all). The vast majority of critics condemn the first category, but that really goes without saying.
