Jeff was sporting a Pippin face t-shirt.

Stone played a LOT of the show strumming with his fingers and pick in his mouth.

Ed pulled a girl up on stage and she sang Won’t Tell with him. It didn’t seem as sour of the moment as it was supposed to be but she still did a fantastic job and it sounded great.

Ed played the intro to Better Man and made the long pause right before he comes in with the first verse… then started Corduroy.

That run of the first five tunes is the best run of all the slow burn starts that I’ve seen them do. And that’s even with me not really liking Elderly Woman live anymore. Release into Of The Girl was masterful.

It only took 14 shows over 28 years, but I finally saw them open with Release.

Easily one of the best I’ve seen. I’ll have more thoughts later, but it was great to see and spend some time with wease and mrs wease today. And getting to meet chris_h_2, a great dude who quite literally just appeared.

Damn near missed the start of this one. Driving alone, so obviously I was farting the whole time. About an hour from Chicago, I got away with a dangerous one. I had intended to go straight to the show, but checking into the hotel first suddenly seemed prudent.

So the show…got to my seat - row 1 in a 400 section - at 8:00. The band was on stage promptly at 8:20. Release was great. I expected them to save it for Saturday, but Long Road will probably get the nod. Of the Girl was a surprise, and the PJ autistic fan next to me ragdolled his girl when he recognized it (too late, in my opinion).

Immortality and Given to Fly are songs I’d be happy with every time. The former played exceptionally well, but at least where I was sitting, GTF kind of fell flat. In 2018 when they opened with it after the rain delay, it absolutely soared. For whatever reason, it didn’t tonight.

I think Ed thought he saw something during Why Go and he was wrong. It was early enough they could have started over, but they didn’t. It will be odd on the bootleg.

Ed laboriously introduced Stevie, and my own PJ autism was bubbling over. It was the one DM song I didn’t see in Vancouver, and my fear that they would play it tonight and not Saturday was a major factor in going to this show. Man, it sounds huge. The crowd seemed to love it. I think it would work well in the encore section. It feels anthemic.

The Wreckage/Daughter combo was already mentioned. I didn’t mind it. I watched a fairly young dude wildly gesticulating and pantomiming during Daughter and I really enjoyed that.

I thought the 2 deep cuts were the only real bummers in the whole show. I just personally don’t like Down, and I’ve seen it probably half a dozen times. I do like U, but they already played it at Wrigley. He also previously used the phrase “for the serious collector” last time to introduce Evil Little Goat.

The rest of the main set was strong. Dark Matter sounds huge, Black is still their best song, and Do the Ev is so enhanced by the visuals behind them. I will say Porch is starting to annoy. It’s like their RITFW, if that makes sense. Like a caricature of the band plays it.

Just Breathe started the encore and caught me by surprise. I’ve seen it a bunch and always rolled my eyes. Tonight it clicked for me, and the crowd really ate it up. Never thought it’d be the highlight of a show for me, but that’s what this band does for me.

Tom Petty to follow was kind of a buzzkill. I thought we were going to go to full band after Just Breathe. State was great, but Won’t Tell was even better. Ed said it’s been getting some radio attention. I hope that means they play it more. What a great song. The girl who dueted with him did a nice job.

Setting Sun doesn’t work where they’re playing it now. It felt like a bonus after the typical closers. In a way, it felt like being gently read to by a parent before bed. I wish they’d go back to that.

I left after the verses of RITFW, and the merch booth on Gallagher was line free. I bought the banner with all 4 Wrigley years. The posters were all available if that’s your PJ autism.

If you’re in the 400s Saturday, the sound is great. The tough part there and every other non-field section is sitting and standing. Whole sections can’t seem to agree on anything.

This was show 51 for me. It was my second time alone (London 2013 was the first and they played Alone). I really enjoyed myself, though less than I did in Vancouver when my son was with me and DM was so fresh. I will say this, though: this show didn’t feel special in the way past Wrigley shows have. That’s not a complaint. Truthfully, I don’t want 35 songs anymore. But this is just another tour stop, at least in terms of setlist length.

I hope they finally don’t do DM repeats on Saturday. Give us React, Respond, Upper Hand, Running, and Something Special, but save Got to Give for Ruddo in Baltimore. I listened to the Vancouver boots during my drive and I think it was the best sounding song. I hope no one read all this.

Nice review (of the show AND your gas)!

I think that was the best version of Black I’ve ever seen live (show #27 for me). Mike was possessed.

Note: was it just me or was something off with the audio after the Why Go restart? Felt like the bass got much lighter.

Were there lots of empty seats? I read about $20 tickets because the concert sold poorly. I thought this was a sell out and the $20 tickets were last minute offloads. Which is it?
