looks like i’ll be hitting up the rescheduled alpine valley show on the 30th. wasn’t going to be able to do any shows this year so the bad weather screwing everything up on saturday turned into a good break for me. i was even able to score a lower center pavilion seat for face just a bit ago, and booked a hotel earlier before the price jumped. everythings coming up milhouse!

even better, i was able to score a pit ticket (first time ever at alpine) and somehow i had the option to request a refund on the ticket i did buy which got processed, so i didn't even have to try and unload that.AndySlash wrote:looks like i’ll be hitting up the rescheduled alpine valley show on the 30th. wasn’t going to be able to do any shows this year so the bad weather screwing everything up on saturday turned into a good break for me. i was even able to score a lower center pavilion seat for face just a bit ago, and booked a hotel earlier before the price jumped. everythings coming up milhouse!
show was absolute fun. third show in three days for the band but you couldn't accuse them of mailing it in- set had a rain/weather theme and the energy from the band was definitely present. set-wise/song-wise the show dragged a bit in the middle for me, from hands of god through the circles cover, but other than that i felt the band gave me a show that was well worth the drive out and back. and the ants [fake] » halloween to close is an all timer show moment for me. did not see that coming at all.

the start of that setlist is hilarious. i remember talking to someone a couple years ago who was complaining about how dave plays songs with the words "rain" in the lyrics when its raining at shows, but this is awesome. they did something similar in camden opening with 'fool in the rain' b/c the show was gonna be delayed b/c of rain. and that is a hell of an encore.

I feel like that might be the most on-the-nose attempt of including the weather to start a set ever but hell, why not?AndySlash wrote:even better, i was able to score a pit ticket (first time ever at alpine) and somehow i had the option to request a refund on the ticket i did buy which got processed, so i didn't even have to try and unload that.AndySlash wrote:looks like i’ll be hitting up the rescheduled alpine valley show on the 30th. wasn’t going to be able to do any shows this year so the bad weather screwing everything up on saturday turned into a good break for me. i was even able to score a lower center pavilion seat for face just a bit ago, and booked a hotel earlier before the price jumped. everythings coming up milhouse!

Glad you enjoyed the show. I haven't listened to any of the shows yet this year but would like to soon, this was high DMB time back in the day.
Looking at past shows, ten years ago tomorrow was #84 for me and with all the chatter over covers these days, ending the electric set busting out Burning Down the House was pretty damn fun.
edit: that Ants fake in to Halloween is fucking awesome.

i love when they do that shit. the best part is it's usually 'halloween' they play after they fake something. they did this when i saw them in AC in 2011 and went back into 'ants' after 'halloween'. i was losing it lol.
this is another example of the horns playing boyds part. the start of the song sounds weird, i think buddy has pulled it off, but they can just cut that lead part of the song and it'd be fine.

Night 1 was a lot of fun with some old classics like LIOG, One Sweet World, Recently. Surprised Ants was played where it was. Fool in the Rain was awesome and the end of the main set was great.
Night 2 was one of the best Dave shows I've ever seen, I think I'm at or close to 40. It was the best start to a concert I've ever been to and the best version of Warehouse I've ever heard. The intro was kinda creepy, then he launched into the stop/time part and i probably launched myself 10 feet in the air yelling. "louie louie" into the ending of the song made it perfect. I can't tell you how goddamn amazing this was.
the segues into 'pig' were fun. i forgot how great 'sugar will' is. 'madman's eye' is a keeper. dave sounded great on 'let's dance'. '#41' is always great. i love when they do 'stairway' at the end of 'watchtower'. i feel like 'everyday' is equal parts '#36'. long version of 'grey street. 'the last stop' i've never heard this one live. it was as awesome as i thought it would be.

I believe Sirius is replaying N2 tonight for the Friday Concert Series tonight so I may listen to these gigs next week.

Anyway, I haven't checked in on this band in a long time. Pearl Jam kind of bumped them off the map for me and I had a long backlash phase. It's interesting to revisit them while perusing this thread. What's been the general consensus on Boyd Tinsley leaving? Not necessarily the nature of his departure but it's impact on the music? I have found myself really glad not to have to endure any fair to middlin' fiddle breakdowns on the recent live videos I've watched.

For me, I was and still am shocked by not feeling any drop off. If I had the choice I would probably still prefer if the old way. But this is still a great band.

Re: Dave Matthews Band
I enjoyed a lot of what Boyd brought to many songs but live that actual product really varied, especially later on in his tenure. The band has certainly tried to fill some of that void with Tim and Buddy but it often comes off terribly to me, though enough time has passed that some bits have simply been written out.lvc wrote:Anyway, I haven't checked in on this band in a long time. That said, everything changed when LeRoi got injured and passed. Jeff is fantastic in his own right but the tone of his playing never hit just right to me. It's a lot to say stepping in but the winds were more focal than the violin overall to me, then Big Whiskey happened and the electric was now part of the everything. I love Tim but the dynamics just changed at the wrong time in my opinion.
They don't sound awful now, far from it and it seems many are still really enjoying gigs which is great; the band also looks pretty happy on stage so kudos to them. I'm actually listening to the Gorge N3 and even with the almost full month off and over ten less dates I think the summer sched will be changing very soon.
They also destroyed Break Free and I despise that, more than bitter.
I 86'd seeing them live at 86 shows.

Announcing Live Trax 67
I saw the show a few days later at Citi Field. Was hoping for something pre-June '08 but at least they are still releasing something.DMB wrote:In 2010, though the release of Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King was relatively fresh, these live tracks bring a more lived-in sound that evolves with the band in the post LeRoi Moore era. Songs like Lying in the Hands of God, Funny the Way It Is, and Time Bomb all have their own moments of pure rock energy that resonates with the storied Bethel Woods location. The band clearly leaves nothing unsaid from the first notes of Squirm to the closing sounds of All Along the Watchtower. This concert recording is sure to satisfy all DMB fans seeking a high energy DMB experience.
