tension and release in music
can someone explain this in a way that someone who doesn't know theory will understand? i heard stone gossard mention these terms when talking about music in general, and now I can stop thinking about it. maybe examples?

Re: tension and release in music
I dunno.. I think it's basically just a catchy hook chorus, usually in a major key following a more minor, stagnant, quiet, or trippy series of verses, bridges, etc. I think of like, the Youngblood's Get Together.warehouse wrote:can someone explain this in a way that someone who doesn't know theory will understand? i heard stone gossard mention these terms when talking about music in general, and now I can stop thinking about it. maybe examples?

Re: tension and release in music
Listen to Dusty. The opening is the tension. When it settles into the verse, you can feel the release. Hanging on a note or chord and then returning to the root, is what I think of.

Re: tension and release in music
This video is not exactly about this topic, but its exploration of how sound waves clash against each other and how that is often used to create "tension" (here expressed as dissonance) is a good place to start. It's also the key to understanding why certain chords feel like they "want" to resolve a certain way.
