But, for me, Wreckage, which I like, doesn't hold a candle to Daughter. They aren't even in the same league.

Re: Wreckage
Daughter is a song that helped raise me. It affected me greatly during my most formative years. I continued to admire and occasionally reconnect with it for a good long while after that.
I do still admire it today. I do still enjoy it. And I can recognize the things that once made it powerful to me.
But a lot of that love is nostalgic now. It rarely puts my heart in my throat or alters my mood, because the whole song is already written into me. It’s built into my processing code. It’s not new input.
Wreckage is a song I just met, which aims for and achieves entirely different things than Daughter. It only has the most surface-level similarities. But it speaks as well to me in the place where I am right now in my life, that Daughter did. It affects me. It does change my mood. It can put my heart in my throat. It is new input.
But also, I am older now. I am less in need of music that can be a guide, and more in need of music that simply recognizes me. Understands this part of the journey. Makes it feel less overwhelming.
10 years from now, Wreckage will either have written itself into my code and be a part of me….or it will be like I Am Mine: a song that spoke to me in one phase of my life, but didn’t really carry beyond it.
Either way, it’s a song that reaches me right now. I don’t know why I would ever feel the need to measure beyond that line.

right on, McP. I think you captured why so many of those older songs are still important to me, but I don't have the drive to seek them out constantly, in the way that there are DM songs I am seeking out weekly, or even daily

Every instinct and internet pleasure center I have is screaming to rank, but you captured why it's getting harder and harder to do in a way that's comprehensible.

Same. I find myself reaching for one of their last 5-6 albums far more than the first 5-6.stip wrote:right on, McP. I can't tell you how much more I've fallen in love with S/T over the past 5 years or so. It is so good. I think only Dark Matter surpasses it for me in terms of anything post Binaural.

DM has only been out for a few months and “Wreckage” has already lost some luster for me. Of all the songs on the record, it is the one that has feels like it has revealed the least to me with repeat listens. I still think it’s good but it has already reached that “I like this but I’m going to skip it this time” status that some people are describing with “Daughter.”
