A Ten Tonne Catastrophe / The Nick Cave Thread

Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

I have heard a lot of hype about this so had planned to dive in, but I just learned it was produced by Dave Fridmann, who I usually can't stand. Did he ruin this thing or what?

I would recommend “push the sky away” 2013. it’s relatively recent and sounds good.

Or any other classic album but my favorite period is 97 - 03.

The record sounds glorious, trag.

As for Fridmann, he's contributed to some really stellar albums. The Woods, They Want My Soul, The Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi, Come On Die Young and It's A Wonderful Life all come to mind.

I love other SK records but The Woods is sometimes in my top ten of all time.

It's intense, precise and uncomfortable - a statement record from artists who wanted to create something that was more than just another group of songs.

I’ve been through the new Cave a couple times and agree it’s excellent, but the sound of it is definitely more in-your-face than the last few Bad Seeds records.

I love it way more than the last few album. Although I totally got the sentiment there, the last 2 all felt a little too boring. Not sure yet if it can hold up against Push The Sky Away (and stuff before that). Definitely some great songs on here. Looking forward to seeing him again end of October.

Unfortunately, this one isn't really grabbing me. I think it ends really well with Long Dark Night and O Wow O Wow, but the rest of it feels like this mushy middle ground between what they were doing on the last few records and what they were doing on albums like Abbaitor Blues. We'll see if it grows over time; Ghosteen certainly took a little while for me (though this feels way more immediately accessible than that record).

I missed this at the time but Mick Harvey uploaded an interview late last year in which he gave some very frank views about Nick and the band - which he (not unreasonably) feels shouldn't really be called the Bad Seeds any longer - and the last few records, including Wild God:

The relevant part starts at 12:09:

Have to agree with him here, I mean it’s natural for the band to evolve but these last 3 records (good or bad) are something else else, maybe they should all have been released under the nick and Warren moniker.

I think Lie Down Here may be just about the perfect recording. Every piece is perfect.

It's my "Friday arvo just about to leave work fuck it" tune.
