I read the first 30 pages of Sebald Austerlitz yesterday but I realized today I wasn't paying attention to any of it and I remember nothing. I'll try to start it again today

I'm reading The Girls by Emma Cline. The Guest was outstanding and this is shaping up to be excellent as well (50% through). I'm kinda surprised more people don't talk about her in literary terms. Feels like her books are marketed as "chick lit" or "beach reads." And they are? I guess... but they're so much more, too. They aren't just page turning plot machines. They have real deep, complex themes and fascinating characters. I don't know. She's really fucking good.

I read The Girls a few years back and enjoyed it.

I read The Guest a couple of months ago, and enjoyed it very much. One of those books you could read in a day if you let yourself.

I liked it a lot. Dark humor. Broken lead character. It’s going to be made into an HBO series, I think. Not why I’d recommend it, but worth checking out if you liked The Guest. Totally different stories, but featured messed up female leads.

Been reading some old sci fi lately.



Weird one. Some big ideas, but doesn't really do much with them. Everyone can teleport up to 500 miles away with a thought, but strangely it doesn't have that much impact on the world.



this...fucking sucked. Really bad writing. Crazy that a whole subgenre is named after this.



This was nice. Like a really great Star Trek episode. I approve.



not scifi. Kinda standard McCarthy, not that it's a bad thing. Probably in the bottom half of his books though.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I've read the Fagles translation and the Emily Wilson translation and liked the Wilson a lot. Fagles wins the first line, though:

"Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns"

vs Wilson's:

"Tell me about a complicated man."

There's millennia of commentary on that line, and I really think Wilson swung and missed there in every way. But from there on out, it's a good read.

I'd like to read some of the earlier translations, too, someday.

I will be engaged with the audiobook version of Wilson"s translation over the next few weeks. Clare Danes narrating sealed the deal.

Funny timing on this bump. I just picked up the paperback of Wilson's new translation of the Iliad this last weekend. I'm going to be looking at that as soon as I finish my current read: The Goldfinch by RM's beloved Donna Tartt.

Also i finished The Shards by Bret Easton Ellis. Dudeee what a wild ride!! its like a mix between Less Than Zero and Lunar Park with sprinkles of a horror movie.
