I think most people understand, deep down, that we are on the brink of a period of historic suffering.

That does things to people. Makes them look for comforting narratives. One that says technology is going to fix it all for us, in the nick of time. Or one that says actually, it’s all bullshit. Or maybe just one that distracts you from the insurmountable, by making somebody else your enemy instead.

It also seems to have caused a large segment of society to flee into the arms of establishment approved managers-of-the-decline, choosing competent corruption over wildly incompetent corruption, as though that would save them. Or else they think that the system (that they mistakenly believe represents them) is working fine but is under attack from the outside.

On the one hand, it's a deeply conservative reaction, and one doomed to fail in a world of inevitable change. But on the other, it reflects the deeply held cynical leftist belief that there are no great individuals capable of saving the world.
