Rebel Ridge (Netflix)

Post by Ensign9 »

This was very good! A slightly higher-brow Walking Tall. Don Johnson should be in more things.

Just read John Boyega was originally the lead, dropped out, and they had to reshoot all of his scenes. They dodged a bullet — Boyega would not have worked in this role.

The Boyega situation is so weird. They went to pick him up to the hotel to shoot and the guy was gone. He never told anyone about it.

Seems he asked for a higher star treatment or something and also wanted to change a lot of the script.

I’m very happy he is not on the movie; his replacement is brilliant.

And yes Don Johnson is just too great , we need a lot more movies with him.

It does seem a little odd three of his most memorable roles over the last decade are white supremacist-adjacent, however…

This was fun, and slightly more grounded then the trailer led me to believe it would be

I like this movie. It's smartly written and the performances are great. It's very engrossing and succeeds in getting you invested as the story unfolds. Simple but satisfying story about systemic corruption. A few really corny moments and some pacing issues but I had a good time watching this.

That said, this is the most Netflix-looking Netflix movie ever made. Flat, murky, horrendously underlit, No flavor at all, and no visual identity aside from a few boring tracking shots. This is a shame because the setting is very rich and filled with opportunities -- I kept thinking "ugh! That would've made such a cool shot if they put some sauce into it"

Anyway, I dunno, 7/10? It's alright!

I think the visual idea works just fine with the story. I think its a conscious choice. In this movie he gets closer to some ideas of S. Craig Zahler maybe, specially in tone and dialogue and i think everything works really well.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Did Blue Ruin or Green Room really look much better, though? Saulnier has never been much of a visualist.
