What I thought would be a fun and rewarding exercise (because I love making playlists) has proven itself an extremely annoying ordeal -- every time I think of the perfect song for a year, it turns out it's not from the year I thought. It's from the next year over or the year before, where I have already picked another song with enormous personal significance. Or I think of this great song from an album released in 1974, but before putting it in the 1974 slot I find out it was actually released as a single in late 1973.

There's no stopping me now though. I'm finishing this thing. And I am POSTING it.
Here's the playlist:

2023 Baroness - "Last Word"
2024 Jade - "Angel of My Dreams"
A few notes:
- 1964 to 2024 makes 61 tracks, not 60. I am stupid
- As a playlist, this sucks. The flow is completely off, there are a few long stretches of slow songs, no one will enjoy this as a listening experience but me.
- The easiest picks were songs that have personal significance. In some cases I found myself caught between a song that marked a specific moment vs. a song that I listen to more often.
- The specter of impression management crept in a few times. "How does this make me look? Wasn't there a cooler / more interesting song released this year?" I had to stamp it down by reminding myself that no one was gonna look at this anyway.
- No jazz anywhere (save for the Bill Frisell track) nor any Burt Bacharach, but that changes if we stretched the date range back by a few years; "Anyone Who Had a Heart" and maybe "Fables of Faubus" would appear
- I probably will extend the date range back to however far back I can manage, and then keep it as an evolving playlist I add a song to every year. Maybe!

Cool idea, thanks for sharing. Outside of The Beach Boys Otis and Clash, I don't think I'd have anything similar on my list. Did you ever consider any PJ? Like something off Vitalogy or No Code for your 94/96 selections? I love your '76 pick, that's a cool song.

Yes, I came close to picking "Man of the Hour" for 2003 until I remembered You Forgot It in People came out that year

Back to Jorge's list, I think I would put Reckoner over Nude but by golly it's close.

Also cool to see Baroness on there.
