Yeah seeing them in an arena didn't appeal to me. Hope it's a good show, some of the setlists have looked pretty good anyway.Chris_H_2 wrote:i need my girl (live) is the national equivalent of betterman (live)
i'll probably end up ordering that cherry tree LP.
seeing them tomorrow night with the war on drugs at an arena which won't do them any favors.

Re: The National
I feel like we've mentioned this before in the thread but when Matt gets hyped to fill an arena (or larger) it rarely works out for the better. It is the nature of the beast with live music by popular bands but if they were playing BAM tomorrow I'd be there. Even Radio City played against the intimacy of their shows from what I recall.4/5 wrote:Yeah seeing them in an arena didn't appeal to me. FWIW, I think the Cherry Tree edition is only available for pre-order for 2 weeks, so get that in soon.Chris_H_2 wrote:i need my girl (live) is the national equivalent of betterman (live)

I ordered it right away. I think extra tracks (esp. About Today) and spreading the show over 3 LPs is a good add for fan club members, thought the “bonuses” for the last two records were sort of weak.

My expectations are extremely low for tonight.

Re: The National
This is what I just texted my friends.
Soooo …
Whomever decided it would be a good idea to book a show at the UC .. on a Tuesday night … in September … with super expensive tickets … and while forgetting that 75% of your crowd is made up of parents worried about babysitters … that person should probably be fired.
The UC was exactly what I feared it would be for this show: lifeless, cavernous, and soul-sucking. It’s hard to mask mellow crowds in that environment. I’m convinced now more than ever that only sporting events and pop concerts should be played there (at least with the latter you have more energetic crowds with visuals and dancers to distract from the crappy music).
WoD had their sound MUCH more dialed in. Maybe it’s their music or their DNA, but the venue didn’t take much away from their time. The problem was that they had to rush their set. Honestly, they probably should’ve been the headliner, but I understand that 70% of the people weren’t there to see them.
The National sounded … not great. Horns and bass were drowned out. Some songs (I’m looking at you Rylan) were train wrecks. It wasn’t all terrible, but they and their sound don’t benefit from terrible acoustics.
This could’ve been better executed. Take out the opener, increase the set times, and play smaller venues.
I did sit next to Glen Kotche. He was super nice.

Re: The National
That's a bummer. Pretty much exactly what I feared/expected when that tour was announced. I would have gone if they came close to where I live but this seems ill-conceived. How was the crowd size? I was gonna ask about the crowd itself but you already said lifeless, so...

100% this. the place was dead. it was even eerily dead silent at times between songs. this concert should have been at the salt shed.Chris_H_2 wrote:This is what I just texted my friends.

Very cool! I’m going to wait for the new album to drop before listening to anything.

I'm luckily going to see him on this tour and the album comes out *after* so I listened so I can know the songs.
First listen through seems great.
