Jorge wrote:The Substance. It's hard to deny the movie's more gleefully unhinged moments of body-horror spectacle, and there are obviously some striking images throughout. But it is also insultingly obvious and heavy-handed, vigorously underlining points (both thematic and narrative) so the audience won't miss them even though they're spelled out in a giant golden billboard with multiple brightly lit arrows pointed straight at it. It's completely witless, and burns through its bag of ideas in about an hour. Unfortunately that's less than half of its runtime. Demi Moore is very good though
I think this pretty much nails it, though I'll say that I probably found the most compelling sequence in the movie to be the part where it was quite literally beating us over the head with what it wanted to say
Spoiler: show
when Sue is literally beating Elisabeth's face into a mirror, really that whole fight sequence
But, yeah, then the movie goes on for like another hour it seems. Definitely had a "don't know how or when to finish this" drag-out problem. It had honestly totally lost me by the end

All About Eve and Dorian Gray by way of David Cronenberg and the Toxic Avenger

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Cool concept and the cast was good, but what a jumbled mess of a movie. Can't figure out what it wants to be. Tries to feel huge, but is really small. Obnoxious soundtrack. Kind of a pre-woke Hollywood movie that thinks it's an indie movie or an Andy Kaufman film.

And the product placement! bleh!

The Rise of Skywalker. Having fun with it. It's kinda nice seeing what happens to these characters, and experiencing such an imaginative, playful world (galaxy) again. I think I got carried away reading reviews and it was unfair of me to judge it before even giving it a chance. It's nice to just watch it like a kid and enjoy it for what it is. These movies are for kids after all.

gave it a long long long rest but hope to watch it with that in mind and through those eyes, tree. its an objectively awful ending to that trilogy and the saga, but it can be enjoyed on its own terms, in deep isolation, if you let it do that.

Really, every episode is silly. It takes some suspension of disbelief to just giddily go along for the ride for each film. It's all more about vibes, imagination and adventure than anything, I think. Having young children begin to enjoy it has opened my eyes to it again. They just got Darth Vader and Boba Fett stuffed animals and are playing Lego Star Wars games and are into the whole thing. It's awesome.

Too ridiculous for me, but Jake Gyllenhaal can elevate anything.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Come on man, it's more like a 6.5. They don't make a lot of good small-scale sci-fi movies anymore.
The ending kinda pissed me off.

I'm not really into Borat type movies anyway, so your mileage may vary.
