Be careful of the mat because it may lower or raise your vertical alignment and then the stylus is either tilted back or leaning forward too much. Currently I just have the felt mat that came on my Rega, but on my old table I had a cork mat which helps dampen any vibrations and it work well. Some people sale the cork can "deaden" the sound too much, but it's up to you.
Today I got Jim James' "Regions of Light and Sound of God," and I've got no use for the MP3 download code. First person to PM me can have the code! (If you've gotten one of my codes recently, please give someone else a chance!)
For one reason or another, a couple of Radiohead records are pretty cheap on Amazon right now. Amnesiac (which I snagged) is under $20 (a rarity!) at $19.99, "The Bends" and "Pablo Honey" are just $14.99, and "Hail to the Thief" (usually close to $30) is just $18.99.
As I typed this up, I decided to also order Pablo Honey to complete my collection (not my fav of theirs by a long shot, but I am a completist).

Yeah I bought King of Limbs for $9.90 a few weeks ago. Unfortunately it's OK Computer that I need because I have a slight warp on one record that creates a warble.
I also bought REM Accelerate at the same time for like $10 because my copy came with two disc 1's, and it arrived in absolutely battered condition. Luckily the 2nd disc is ok but the jacket is creased and the top/bottom seams are split. So I'm going to send it back for a refund but will swap the record with the one I need.
I dunno what it is, but I've gotten some good deals off Amazon lately. Trying to liquidate extra holiday stock, maybe? The only reason I would hesitate is because their packaging can sometimes be awful, as I think you were suggesting, southp.

Sometimes the records are loose in a box that's about 50% too long so they slide around. However some records (like the Dark Side 30th anniversary reissue that I bought) come in a proper LP mailer that is then placed inside that bigger box and arrived in perfect shape.
I've been getting LP mailers with the quote from Shakespeare on them more often than not recently. The box Mellon Collie came in was an abortion, thought (even though it's a bulky box set, it wasn't secure or marked fragile)
The mailers (packed in the bigger box) say "Certified Frustration Free Packaging" and they have an extra inner fold that really holds a single LP in place.
Additionally the front of the mailer has a sticker with barcode for the LP that's inside... like it was sent from the manufacturer this way. Here are some pics....
I've discussed a few of them, but just to wrap up my recent purchases in a neat little list:
Neil Young and Crazy Horse - Americana
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F# A# ∞
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada
Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans
Band of Horses - Mirage Rock
Jim James - Regions of Light and Sound of God
My Morning Jacket - It Makes No Difference 10''
Beastie Boys - Alive 7''
On the way this month:
Radiohead - Pablo Honey
Radiohead - Amnesiac
Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories)
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Push The Sky Away
Eels - Wonderful, Glorious
ive been wanting to get a nice turntable for a long time but dont know anything about them. Ive only had one and it was an old hand me down that never sounded right, the speed was always off i think, it had an adjuster but i couldnt make it right so i never use it, and also i dont have a ton of albums since i had nothing good to play them on, ive got all the pj albums and about 15 or 20 classic rock yard sale pick ups and wanna have a good reason to start getting more.
What brands are good, what kinda stuff do i need to know about having one,and what kinda price should i be expecting?
I would move this to the Vinyl thread to get more responses. Also check here (specifically, the links in the sidebar) for some tips and FAQs: http://www.reddit.com/r/vinyl/

I thought there was a thread somewhere, but i didn't really search, where is it?
Lately I've been reading a lot about the Technics 1200 series tables, which aren't made anymore, so if you want to go for one, you'll need to try eBay, Craigslist, or a vintage dealer. This may run you around $300 (based on the eBay auctions I've been watching). I will probably get a new table in May, and I'll probably get an Audio-Technica LP120, which is basically a clone of that Technics model. Retail for that is about $300, new, but it's on Amazon for $220; which is good, b/c then I'll be looking to spend $60-$80 or so on needle.
