yeah he is way more loose than Selway but at the same time he sounds super tight too. Its great. And he sounds great with whatever Jonny is doing.zeb wrote:Selway is terrific and iconic but Skinner is otherworldly.VinylGuy wrote:I love the drums on the new album. Re: The everyone LOVES radiohead thread!
Skinner is a WAY better drummer than Selway. There's a reason Radiohead plays with 2 drummers live
I can see why Thom and Johnny want to work with him. That first Smile album is just as good (even better) than the last 2 RH albums. However this Cutouts album and the one before are hit or miss to me. Both have great tracks whereas others are just a bit undercooked jams. But that's probably want they want with this project. Just a bit looser and freeer than their main gig.

Yep, a lot less pressure and expectation.joostone wrote:Just a bit looser and freeer than their main gig.
They've really knocked this project out of the park. I hope it's not the last we see of The Smile.

I rank The King of Limbs towards the bottom, but I do really like it.
However, if it was the From the Basement version of the album I was ranking, it would probably be several notches higher.

In Rainbows: this album seems to save my life every now and then
OKC- just revolutionary
A Moon Shaped Pool- such a thrilling evolution
Hail to the Thief- less of a cohesive ride than the ones above it, but comprised of amazing parts
The Bends- considering they hadn't made the leap to transcendent art rock, this was about as good as Britpop got
King of Limbs- the last three songs are like a perfect ep
Kid A- has my favorite RH tune (How to Disappear Completely) but is otherwise kind of mediocre
Amnesiac- it's good, but it really does sound like b-sides to me
Pablo Honey- it's awesome, but also not nearly as ambitious as anything else they've ever done

I agree with most of your views but Kid A for me is untouchable, the first step on what RH became for most of their career. I agree that The Bends seems to be way more melodic and straight with time and now we are used to a different thing from them.

Ditto on The Bends... Sure, their color palette got way more complex on subsequent releases (and almost always for the better).tragabigzanda wrote:that's fair!Chris_H_2 wrote:i think you meant "even though it's depressing . . ."tragabigzanda wrote:The Bends also holds the honor of being the sole Radiohead album that feels kind of fun and upbeat to listen to. Doesn't make The Bends' side B any less of a monster.

Incidentally, the moment I figured out Street Spirit on guitar was one of those outsized small victories that can bring you so much joy. I'm not a great guitarist by any stretch, but it's just complex enough that it feels wonderful.Buby wrote:Ditto on The Bends...
