I haven't seen the original yet, but what I liked about the American version was: James McAvoy's expert straddling of the line between friendly obtuseness and utter sinister menace, feeling like he could snap at any moment and then when he finally does it's so satisfying; and from a more thematic standpoint, the constant picking and prodding at white liberal notions of respectability and propriety, teasing them out and exposing them as a vain façade. That seemed to me where most of the interesting tension in the movie came from, and I think the most important part of it

yeah, thats basically why i saw it. I read about how they changed and it sounded stupid and now that i saw it yes, its very stupid. Im not a fan of the original but at least the ending was fucked up enough to actually leave some impression. This thing is as stupid as hollywood can get with a remake.

The Rewatchables episode on The Blair Witch Project is a great listen. It was cool hearing people who saw it on opening weekend talk about the marketing, believability and general buzz. A different time, to be sure.

I saw it then. We were standing outside an artsy theater in DC and an elderly driver who had the other movie playing there had a stroke while leaving the parking lot and crashed into cars parked along the street pushing them onto the sidewalk next to the line waiting to get it. No one was hit but one of the scariest moments of my life.

That's legit. Did (m)any people walk out? I didn't see it until a few years later on VHS. By that time a lot of the magic was gone but it was still super unsettling.

i dont remember people walking out no, but being super engaged with the movie. People loved it really.

on a whim I decided to get all the Val Lewton movies on bluray - had the old dvd set but had never upgraded them. think I'm gonna pause my annual Halloween series run-through to at least watch I Walked With a Zombie tonight.

Second watch of Longlegs and wow, what a brilliant movie. I got way more this time and i enjoyed Nic so much. Im also very impressed with Alicia Witt.

on a whim I decided to get all the Val Lewton movies on bluray - had the old dvd set but had never upgraded them. think I'm gonna pause my annual Halloween series run-through to at least watch I Walked With a Zombie tonight.

What's in that set? Love Cat People, Leopard Man and The Body Snatchers.

The old dvd set had all of the horror films he produced, plus the Scorsese doc. They haven’t done a similar set on Blu-ray, although they did a couple double releases. Criterion just released an I Walked With A Zombie/Seventh Victim combo which is what started me on the path to just buying them all.

Revisited A Nightmare on Elm Street last night. I really thought it would click this time but nope, I actually liked it less than ever. Craven just wasn't a very good filmmaker, IMO. Once Nancy starts setting up Home Alone-style traps for Freddy toward the end it deflates any hope that was left of the movie working for me.

On the other hand, I also revisited The Hitcher via the gorgeous new 4K remaster and that movie is really something special. Hauer is unbelievable and Mark Isham's score is sublime.
