i'm not sure i've ever seen kid a described as 'mediocre'. it's not even my favorite radiohead album, but its the album that changed everything. obviously its hard to separate it from 'amnesiac', but after OKC they somehow went further out and still maintained a level of accessibility. 'the national anthem' is the still funkiest thing they've ever done.

National Anthem is awesome. “Kid A” the song is not really my cup of tea, and “Everything in its right place” opens the album by signifying they’ve moved toward more electronic, less organic instrumentation. That always puts me off a little. I’m a guitar rock guy.

Have you seen them live? All the electronic stuff is an entirely different animal in that setting.

I HATES Burn the Witch, then they blew the roof when I saw them play it. Idioteque is another one that really feels on another level.

i totally get it. i probably like 'the bends' as much as 'kid a' b/c i'm more of a guitar rock guy myself. its also why i love 'hail to the thief' b/c they remembered how to write with guitars lol. kid a is probably the point in their career where they went much more rhythmic based, even with the guitar. i don't think there's anything inorganic about 'everything in its write place', it's just played on keys with weird effects. i think it was written on a grand piano. 'optimistic' sounds like the same band who wrote 'ok computer'. 'idioteque' is a whole different beast that is hard to explain, and as was stated already, transforms into something different when played live. it sounds like what taking acid and ecstasy together feels like. that's maybe the best way to explain it lol. it also weirdly works as a tag to 'betterman'

I agree with most of your views but Kid A for me is untouchable, the first step on what RH became for most of their career. I agree that The Bends seems to be way more melodic and straight with time and now we are used to a different thing from them.

The Bends also holds the honor of being the sole Radiohead album that feels kind of fun and upbeat to listen to. Even when it's depressing, it's often in a major key and with some sense of triumph underpinning the bleak.

I am sure I have posted this before but Thom’s voice on The Bends is a huge obstacle for me — it has this feral cat-like quality to it that I just find extremely unpleasant. He gained a lot of mastery over his voice over the next couple records, and learned to harness the falsetto (IMO) a lot more artfully.

the opening notes of everything in its right place is one of the best openers of any album. the only thing that could possibly rival it is the opening chords to airbag.

Didn't know you felt that way. Love how he sounds on the album, though it is underdeveloped compared to where he's wound up. Conversely, he's doing too much ghostly moaning on the Smile stuff for me.

Y’know, I have yet to listen to a single Smile song. If I am being honest, I have drifted away from Radiohead a bit in the past decade or so — I thought AMSP was only okay, and even before that they were never a “check out their side projects”-type band for me. Though at this point it is probably unfair to call The Smile a side project…

To be fair, that's a bit misleading. He was talking about fan speculation about Radiohead's future, not Radiohead's future itself. He also went on to say: "No offence to anyone and err, thanks for caring. But I think we've earned the right to do what makes sense to us without having to explain ourselves or be answerable to anyone else's historical idea of what we should be doing."
