The lyrics really hold this one back for me. Which is unfortunate because I really like some of them.

I am in this boat with you. The whole "feel love/from above" stuff has this "put your hands in the air/wave em like you just dont care" cheesiness to it.

I think its tastes briefly of contemporary christian, and its just enough that it knocks all the wind out of my boner until the preRunning kicks in.

It's the shout singing throughout 80 percent of the song that holds it back too. Same reason I can't get into Dark Matter as much as many of you others. Wish there was another verse or section with the vocal delivery of the bridge.

I think this is (no hyperbole) one of the best lyrics in the catalog. longing to belong to something, to feel like you matter, and worrying that you dont, and arent worthy of it, is a central existential human experience. it is what motivates Eddie in Release 30 years ago and has been there ever since. and it is such an efficent and powerfil distillation of that idea.

For me a big part of this song's power comes from its placement. I still can't get over the way Won't Tell sets up Upper Hand which sets up Waiting for Stevie. When I first heard all three of these songs in the record store listening party, it was a moment I'll never forget and literally every time I listen to them in order now it recalls the same thrilling feeling.

Until Something Special one of the things that Dark Matter does so well is just build constantly. Even comparatively quieter songs like Wreckage move at a clip and end in a big way. People slag on the production, and it can be a lot, but I think part of the 'loudness' contributes to it. The album plays in a way that feels overwhelming at times, but for me that's a good thing. Dark Matter is a lot, but it's a lot in the way that some of those early records just felt huge and importance and all encompassing.

I think I just identified a big difference between you and I when it comes to consuming music -- or rather, specifically, Pearl Jam. This is really interesting and not something I'd even considered this angle.

Oh, yeah. Totally. I dig that too. But I don't often think of the entire album in those terms. That's what I find interesting.

Which songs do you think fall into that latter category?

Anyway, suffice to say, "big building cartharsis" is definitely not my Pearl Jam lane.

I forget, Spenno, are you a Radiohead fan?

For some reason I thought you were big into them and I was gonna ask how you reconciled the catharsis of Radiohead with the catharsis of PJ. But I misremembered your level of fandom.

But also, if you have any thoughts on that compare/contrast, I'd be interested in hearing them. So feel free!
