Since 2006, it has taken Maricopa County an average of 13 days to count all the votes, largely because of the time needed to process early ballots dropped off on Election Day. Processing involves verifying the signature on an early ballot, removing it from the envelope, and feeding it into the tabulator machine.

The longest it took Maricopa County to report complete results was 17 days in 2008; the shortest was 8 days in 2014.

For the first time since 2006, Maricopa County voters are facing a two-page ballot this year, which doubles the amount of paper the tabulators must count.

“It will take more time to process and tabulate double the number of ballot pages,” election officials noted in briefing documents.

Another change could impact the speed of results on election night. Due to a new law passed by the Legislature this spring, poll workers must hand-count the green ballot envelopes dropped off on Election Day.

In Maricopa County, poll workers must complete this hand count before breaking down the vote center and returning materials for tabulation. This will delay the first batches of in-person votes reported on election night.
