The Cure

Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

Trag's comments are completely fair and I'm a ballbag.

Sozza, broseph. I still think it sounds great, but I see what you mean about clarity up top.

Hold up, maybe I'm wrong and it really only is the drums that have ruined the last three decades of the band.

A random fan overlaid his own "Boris Williams-style" drums over A Fragile Thing and the impact is quite revolutionary, it actually sounds like The Cure:

Hopefully he tackles a few other songs too.

Ooo shit, Spenno is Traggin'

I really love 'Warsong'. The bass is just the right amount of brutal. Wouldn't be out of place on a Faith No More tune, which obviously rules and is totally badass.

I kind of associate The Cure with heavily filtered industrial 80s type drums, which is what this album has

yes but even a lot of those processed 80s stuff isn’t as oppressive. Again, it’s the difference between the texture of a drum hit — the gated reverb and layered electronic drums of the genre/era — and the volume of the individual hits, i.e. having them all hit your ear drum at the exact same volume for every note of the song.
tragabigzanda wrote:Like even the early Peter Gabriel stuff, which is super processed, still have a lot of air and ambience going on.
I don't think the Cure really went too hard down that road, most of their drum recordings seem pretty natural (with lots of reverb, sure).

The most industrial sounding they ever got was One Hundred Years and that's a distorted/filtered drum machine.

In any case, with respect to the video above, it's the playing more than the sound that makes the difference. It's clearly been made with a lot of love and reverence for the feel Boris brought to the band's music, Jason is just a completely different drummer.

I believe Robert has said that after every one of their most recent releases. I remember when the self-titled album had a "darker, heavier" counterpart that they would release shortly afterwards. Same with 4:13 Dream, which was supposed to be followed by another album with "all the depressing songs." Neither of them materialized. So I don't believe Robert anymore

He does seem to have a very specific plan this time around - maybe he's more likely to follow through this time because he intends to wrap the band up.

there's a bunch of things I love by them, but as an entire album experience I think I agree

The new one is outstanding, but when was the last time you listened to Disintegration?

I've never listened to a single The Cure album; only singles. If I get to this one it will be my first. I guess I should give Disintegration a listen?

Did we not do this recently?

I'd go Wish > Head on the Door > Disintegration > Pornography
