Taking the long view, I’m starting to think this election outcome might actually be best for the country. It reflects where we truly are and could push us to finally address our own problems instead of outsourcing them. A lot of Texans who voted for strict deportation policies may be in for a surprise when there’s no one to maintain their lawns in a few years. The same goes for comfortable retirees who could see their purchasing power drop, or conservative school districts that rely heavily on tax levies to stay afloat, only to struggle when low-wage earners—often immigrant families—are no longer around to contribute to the tax base. These districts might soon feel the impact of shrinking resources and declining student populations, especially in communities that lean on a precarious balance of low-paid labor and property taxes.

This isn’t about schadenfreude; it’s about finally facing the contradictions of a capitalist system that has depended for generations on immigrants (and let’s not forget Indigenous people) to maximize profit while minimizing costs. By forcing us to see the real costs of these dependencies and how we’ve structured our society around them, we might finally be able to have an honest conversation about our economy, our values, and the roles immigrants have always played in supporting the American way of life.

Probably time to keep a close eye on child labor laws.
