Here's another thought about The Substance, and this isn't really an attack on the movie just something about its internal logic I didn't quite get:

We've seen movies like Death Becomes Her where fading stars turn to a miracle cure that makes them forever young. And this is good because they get to continue to pursue fame and public adoration, etc.

But the titular substance doesn't do that. It creates a whole OTHER person, disconnected from you, who goes on to enjoy the youth and fame and fortune. Meanwhile you're comatose for a week.

Who would want that?!? Did Demi understand this?? It seemed like she did. Why would she want that?? It sounds awful! I'll just give birth to a new person FROM MY SPINE and then THEY can have fame and fortune! And then when the Substance support people offer to end the process early on, she says no! Why???

my friend, I think you just unpacked the (more interesting) point of the movie: all that can truly come of the dream that we could go back to a version of us we once were... is trauma, pain, a distortion of what we've worked for; the world tries to resell us back a "younger self", a "beautiful self", a less traumatised self; but if we allowed that self to collaborate with us, would it really do what's best for us? or would we find being a new amalgam of past and present -- two different selves -- even worse than we became through our own free will?

back to what I do love about the messaging: I'm always thinking "what if I'd been able to grow up acknowledged as a girl?" -- an interesting thought experiment but if I allow it to take over my life, all there is is the anger and grief that it didn't happen that way, the "monster"

I don't think she said "no" to going back to herself because she didn't want to; I think that by then, she just couldn't, she was too distorted and in pain; the only way out then is through

my main problem was the storytelling.
I saw Revenge and i thought that was a way better movie than this one, were i felt like the director ( women or men, is the same for me in terms of storytelling´s flaws) was on and on saying the same and the same and the same and underlined so many stuff for us to reeeally get what she was saying or trying to.

The last scene went forever and the lack of a good edition made it boring and it didnt quite had the power and energy that it needed.

I do agree that everything related the Quaid character was great and scary, and i also know men like that so it didnt felt like cartoonish at all.

Still, Coralie Fargeat made two very interesting, great looking films so im exited about whatever she have for us next.

Probably ? Not sure. I guess it could be a good thing yeah; it felt very fucking long yes. But I also agree with Jorge in how the director chooses not be subtle at all with many different scenes.
I don’t remember any example now because it’s like two months since I saw it; but Jorge puts a good one there.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer -- I liked it, but wish they'd gone away from the stilted and stylized performance concept. I think it would have been way more interesting if naturalistic.

The Souvenir - well made, I guess, but man what an infuriating movie.

Mostly the script, yeah. But also the editing and storytelling choices. There's a lot to be desired on the way it's shot, too.

Weirdly, I am really wanting to watch part 2, though.

I didn't like the improvisational style of dialogue. Usually I do like that kind of thing but it didn't really work here for me. Felt a bit pedestrian and undercooked.

There's so much that happens out of frame and the camera hardly moves. Which isn't necessarily bad, but here it makes the thing feel heavy and static.

I certainly don't need any spoon-feeding but the narrative jumps are challenging especially in their relationship. There's not enough to suspend disbelief or to empathize with. So hey choices feel really fake and forced, even though it's semi-autobiographical.

Honestly, it's probably mostly the relationship itself. The other stuff might be easier to navigate if I didn't hate him so much.

Goddamn, what a movie. A perfect blockbuster.
