Backspacer and LB really do make this a near-impossible exercise. Even the songs I like on those albums feel too minor to elevate an album like this. You almost have to lean into the minor-ness to make it even sort of work.

how on earth is one's familiarity/affection for a new PJ album a yardstick of this? like every new PJ album I listened to it a couple times and took away one or two songs I liked, none of the others stuck
