I watched True Lies last week and I was a little blown away. Is that movie underrated? It feels like it flies under the radar, but it's absolutely spectacular - up there with T2 and Total Recall in Arnie's catalog.

There's no way it's on the same level as T2. What the hell, Tommy.

True Lies is some kind of masterpiece and way, way better than T2, which is Cameron’s worst film, for my money.

True Lies is a wonderful film, with one of the best Arnold performances yes. Jamie Lee Curtis is also amazing, and yes, that scene.

T2 is a groundbreaking achievement.

Didn't care for True Lies that much when it came out. I dunno, it was fine. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for a comedy.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Finally watched One From the Heart after years of only knowing it from the soundtrack album; the last time before this year that Coppola went crazy and made an ambitious, expensive movie everyone hated. It's so good! Really beautiful photography, camera work, production design, and editing. And a really funny depiction of disillusioned adulthood. Reminds me of Company at parts. Also yeah that soundtrack is awesome

Alien: Romulus is a beautifully made piece of shit. So extremely tired of movies populated entirely by anonymous 12-year-olds. Especially in something like this, where the characters are supposed to be beaten down and world-weary. Didn’t buy any of them for one second. Like why go through all the work to create such a tangible, lived-in world only to immediately break the illusion with a bunch of doe-eyed babies? I’ve been so spoiled by the far superior way old British genre movies were filled with veteran thespians playing adults with unique experiences, interests, and personalities. American horror casts are so goddamn dull by comparison, and this awful, formulaic, faceless script does them no favors.

I’ll give Alvarez credit for a lot of his visual work, though. I don’t remember being impressed by the imagery/craft of any new movie like this since West Side Story. Amazing what having black levels that are actually black can do for your movie.

I thought Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson were fantastic.

In a Violent Nature was much more interesting than I expected. Very funny and entertaining, and I loved how it played with artifice and nostalgia. Stirred up my brain in enjoyable ways. Much better than dumbass Romulus.

Kinda shocked at the extent to which your assessment of this film hinged on the cast

They were a huge problem. The biggest issue for me, for sure. Though, again, it’s as much (or more) the script’s fault as theirs. If they had well-written characters to play, maybe they could have worked.

But doing stuff like mirroring the Aliens scene where Michael Biehn teaches Sigourney Weaver how to use a pulse rifle while I’m looking at no name baby #1 and no name baby #2 in place of Biehn and Weaver is just insulting.
