Most Tragically Over-Lived Bands

Post by warehouse »

U2
incredible run of albums and singles in the 80s. The Joshua Tree>Rattle and Hum>Actung Baby is one of the best three record runs ever. i have no idea what happened to them in the 1990s. once bono started singing in spanish it was over. also clear signs of dementia as he can't count

Weezer
first three albums are golden. maybe platinum by this point. i even like maladroit. then they released 'beverly hills' and everything went down hill. i tried to stop listening to them after 'trouble maker' but these idiots are everywhere. i can't believe this is the same band that made the blue album, that thing is amazing.

Green Day
if pop punk is a thing, these guys nailed it. everything before 'american idiot' is what pop punk should sound like, even if they did stuff w/ acoustic instruments. 'dookie' is legendary among people my age. 'american idiot' is fine, but they clearly tried to turn into a classic-rock influenced band instead of the band from the same club rancid played in. they even started covering 'the who' and 'the beatles', who are these guys, pearl jam? gtfo and play 'welcome to paradise'

Pearl Jam
Smashing Pumpkins
Sleater-Kinney

I loved Daughters when they broke up in 2010, then after a decade-long hiatus, they came back and released an album I didn’t like and their singer abused his partner and tanked the whole group. Great work.

Once KISS becomes a 100% holographic touring bot then I'll say them.

You can populate this list any time you see a hair metal 80s band on a joint tour, like a Motley Crue/ Warrant/ Poison tour.

I’d partly argue against this. Motley Crue is dreadful, for sure, but I’ve seen Poison and Def Leppard and REO Speedwagon in the last couple years, and they were all great fun. Everyone attending was having a great time.

The original post said the most definitive answer: Weezer. Holy shit. They’re the Aaron Rodgers of music.

Okay now that is funny. Granted there’s probably some web forum for Weezer fans with the same thread saying the same thing about Pearl Jam (“they haven’t released a culturally relevant album in over 25 years. They’re running around the stage in fedora’s to hide their poorly groomed hair plugs at this point!”)

Yeah , there's a running meme that no one hates Weezer more than Weezer fans.

I read an article recently about old bands that are still touring and some of them have no original band members. Of course the original lineup might not be the most famous one, but anyway I think all these bands belong to this thread:

Slade (guitar player is the only original member)
Gong (no original band members)
Canned Heat (drummer is the only band member from the bands "golden era")
Asleep at the Wheel (singer/guitar player is the only original band member)
Soft Machine (no original band members)
Big Country (no original band members)
Kraftwerk (1 original band member)
The Animals (drummer is the only original band member)
I want to be a warm and friendly person
But I don't know how to do it

Yeah, there's an especially ghoulish quality to this phenomenon. Skynyrd is in there, too. It's like the hangers-on just took over the brand. And to even consider the band a brand is the tragic exchange of doing anything artistic for money.

Skynyrd has no one in the band anymore from before 1996-97 other than the replacement singer that joined in ‘87. There’s only one guy that was in the band during their heyday and he quit back in ‘91, never to return.

What if you started a cover band and actually became the band that everyone wanted to see? Like say a Pearl Jam cover band that went back to playing longer shows, didn't have a singer straining through decades of cigarette tar and scar tissue, and was willing to play something at the tempo they wrote it at...

There were three fleetwood macs touring the US at the same time at one point. After they split up they each insisted they owned the name and got sessions heads in.
Each one only had one original fleetwood mac member.
To her credit I don’t think Stevie nicks took part in the nonsense.
