Nice job, you made me realize I would like this song way more with a different arrangement. There's a really good song in there that got neutered by an excessive arrangement so it ended up as an only okay song.

I'm not sure Sirens is an 'easy' song for him to sing simply because he's not scraping the heights of his upper register.
Yeah, there are more note transitions in this melody than Ed usually writes. Look at all the notes just in that intro, particularly in that "Iiiiii... hear the sirens" (two notes, sung twice, just in a single 'I'). So even when he's not belting it out, there's more room for error. As I say, the performance was kind of rough, but I'm not sure this kind of song will ever be sung perfectly live, particularly if Ed is under pressure or nervous.

I agree the most difficult aspects of Sirens have nothing to do with range. There are some wordy parts sung/belted in one breath. That and the seamless falsetto transitions. But the difficulty of these is being overestimated if anyone thinks that the song is too difficult for Ed to sing now.
Pearl Jam is the only band I'll spend money on.

I haven't heard the live versions beyond this one, but I feel like everyone has been saying the song is kind of rough live, vocally at least. That seems like it may be a good indication that it's a reach for Ed. Who knows what could be a weakness to him? It may be a weakness he had never encountered until the melody for this song presented it.

I was wondering all week how he was gonna handle it. 3 sets of back to back shows, doing 3 hour shows a pop. I was thinking this had to be one of the hardest weeks his voice has had over the past decade of his career.

I'm really glad we have Release_Me around to point out the logic when folks get hyperbolic (it's tricky to rock a rhyme...).

Alongside of that, this was an awful performance. Less b/c he "can't hit those notes anymore" and more b/c his voice was clearly shot after doing 34 song marathons over the last week whilst drinking his balls off.

The mix certainly didn't help. The song just fucking laid there. Big disappointment.

I don't see how Lightning Bolt is going to be any better for his voice, considering the twists and turns and ups and downs of that. Fuck.

Good post.

They should do Swallowed Whole. A little more straightforward for him and high energy for the TV.

Yep, I think that is the reason it was a little rough in spots. But, I still didn't think it was nearly as bad as the comments in this thread are suggesting.

I bet he grew his hair long just to piss ed off. I bet he flips it around all exaggerated and blows at it when he fucks up a guitar part saying 'sorry my hair was in my eyes', all the time.

Do you think he uses straighteners?

I still wish he'd sung LTRP :(

Not a great performance, but as a Pittsburgher, cool that Ed had the "21" sticker on his guitar commemorating his trip to the Clemente Museum when he was in town.

To be fair, Ed has sounded as bad or worse before. I recall a few live performances from 03-04 and then 08-09 which were not very good at all. Probably just tour fatigue so all he needs is some rest.

He sounds pretty good here performing Sirens live, not struggling with his voice at least. He does start moving too much (that can't be good for breath support) and gets distracted when he picks up the guitar, but it's much better than Falon. Far from perfect, but pretty good.
