The cold open was a bit of a surprise. I guess Dana Carvey will be sticking around this season a good bit? Musical Gladiator was pretty good. Would it really be a big deal if a guy came home from college with an earring in 2024? It would have been a big deal if I had done so but that was 30 years ago. Mescal did an okay job, pretty good actually for a first time dramatic actor hosting. He took a more “play it straight” approach in the sketches and it mostly worked.
High expectations the next two weeks with Chris Rock and Martin Short.

Not a good episode. I hate when hosts rely so heavily on off camera cues that it throws off the rhythm of the dialogue. Chris Rock was awful at it

I thought it was alright. You knew you were going to get an extended monologue and he had some good lines. I like the Santa sketch and Sandler’s bit was a genuine surprise in one of the sillier things they’ve done this season. Update had some good jokes.
But yeah, Rock is one of the obvious cue card readers and his delivery can come across flat. It’s jarring considering how tight his standup presence is.
Martin Short is an excellent sketch player and next week’s is bound to be one of the lighter, playful episodes of the season.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the last one before Christmas typically has several cameos but that was a lot. The parking lot sketch got some good laughs and the airport parade had a few chuckles. The Peanuts sketch was silly nostalgia. Update was better than usual overall but it was the twice a year Joke Off that was the highlight of the night. The cuts to Scarlett Johansson and the crowd’s reactions were icing on a great “they’re just jokes” bit :haha:

Other than the daughter, Parking Lot was really getting on my nerves…

Until McCarthy came out. I’m not normally a big fan of hers but she absolutely cracked me up with that. I don’t know how much of that was scripted but it was funny as hell.

Update was fucking hysterical.

50th Anniversary special on February 16th.
The parking lot was good but felt long until Melissa’s McCarthy’s bit. She’s a scene hog who always plays it broad but more often than not her appearances get a laugh from me.
