I just started seeing all of the conspiracy whackos on the astrophotography pages I follow start to mention one I haven't heard of. Project Blue Beam? Haha wtf. Some shadow world government is faking UFOs and will fake an alien invasion to unite the world into one and get rid of Abrahamic religions and replace them with some new age belief system.

That part I hadn't ever read before, but the idea of using space-based lasers to make a UFO "appear" over a densely populated area and causing a panic that is leveraged to unite people under more centralized control is nothing new. Same general theory as the nuke strike from Cuba conspiracy and many of the 9/11 conspiracies.

What’s more unrealistic: that mass panic would encourage unity in the year 2024, that any impetus is necessary in order to drive Americans towards authoritarial comforts, or that people would be more likely to believe a government space laser was aliens than they would be to believe the other way around?
