I’ll try it again one of these days — it was 2004-2005 and my entire listening mindset was just different. I am sure it would sound a lot more at home alongside the stuff I am more drawn to these days.

Been into Coleman ‘ s The Shape Of Jazz To Come; mainly because of the studio albums thread but also because it made me remember when I was first listening to miles, Coltrane and him and discovering the world of jazz

Question; who do you guys think it’s the best jazz drummer from all times ?

I have really been enjoying what Elvin Jones has been putting down the last few studio albums jazz albums I have been listening to, but astonished by Blakey and Roach as well. I am firmly now in the column of the jazz drummers toppling rock drummers in this moment.

what about modern jazz drummers? And by modern we can think from the 70s, 80s onward.

Tyshawn Sorey
Jeff Ballard
Brian Blade

All great modern jazz drummers.

IMO Tony Williams is the GOAT, but everyone mentioned so far is amazing.

I love Mark, maybe one of my fav drummers of these recent years but I don’t quite get his solo albums.

Believe it or not, that’s actually a different Avishai Cohen — the one Guiliana played with is a bassist, and the one I posted about the other day is a trumpeter. Confused the hell out of me when I was first discovering him/them (I am much more familiar with Avishai the trumpeter).

Guiliana is great though. I am a huge Mehldau fan and his playing on all those records is fantastic, especially “Taming the Dragon.” I had no idea he played on all those other records — quite the resume!

Probably a top 10 album of all time for me, probably my all-time favorite jazz album, and easily my favorite Miles. "Shhh/Peaceful" is one of the most important recordings in my music-listening life -- one of those tracks that just completely recalibrated the way I listened to everything.

The new Jeff Parker really is amazing. It feels like one long slow burn at first but there are so many little fragments I keep getting stuck on -- like right now there's this passage at about 17:30 of "Easy Way Out" where the sax breaks into this really hummable, infectous three-note riff, while Parker just unleashes this maelstrom of notes on the guitar. Incredibly cathartic. Such a great record!
