Arthur is one of the best video game characters of all time. His story really starts to open up around Act 3 if I recall correctly.
The pace is deliberately very slow and it's not for everyone.

Best video game characters is an interesting concept. Because I haven’t played many non-Nintendo games, I’m not even sure who would qualify for inclusion.Monkey_Driven wrote:Arthur is one of the best video game characters of all time. So I jumped the gun a bit. Today during lunch, my kids asked if I was going to quit. Neither of them play many story games, but they both played and loved this. After talking, I gave it one more shot, and for the first time, I was having fun. I got a better handle on the dead eye mechanism and started to make some headway. I’m now on chapter 3 and a quarter of the way through the story. I am resolved to see the story through. Zelda will wait until spring break in late March.

Re: Red Dead Redemption 2
Now that I'm out of the introductory section, the game world is really opening up for me, and that's great. I had some trouble with the controls at the beginning but I'm getting better, although combat seems to be the last thing I'm getting good at. But there are a few things that are weird and stand out to me, which I think are 100% a Rockstar problem and not RDR2-specific problems, as I faced similar things with GTAV. I just don't get the inventory sometimes, man. I was hunting with Hosea and I had a 6-shooter, a rifle, and a bow, and then he asked if I wanted to go back to camp and I said "Nah, I'll keep hunting," but once he left I lost all my weapons except for the 6-shooter. There's also this thing where a point of interest or a person will pop up on the map, but by the time I turn my horse around and go back, it's gone, or the chance to interact has disappeared. Again, had the same issues with GTAV, and they didn't stop me from liking that game, so I'm sure I'll adapt.
Not an issue with the game per se, but how I play video games now just makes this one hard to get into. I might get 20 minutes in a day to play, or I might get 30 minutes at a time some days, and in that time all I can do sometimes is travel between two points, then it won't be until the next day when I can do a single mission, and then the next day after that all I'll do is travel. The game is so beautiful, but sometimes I wish it was a little more contained so I could get more stuff done quickly. Again, that's a my-time problem, of course.

You can absolutely play Arthur good or bad in terms of the day to day decisions you make, but you will have to accept that for the purposes of the game's story arc he's a man who is often on the wrong side of the law because he's doing cowboy in the Wild West stuff.daft twat wrote:I don’t like Arthur. He’s a shit bag. I’ll save a woman from being kidnapped or a man from a snakebite on my own, but then the missions have me beating the shit out of in debt farmers or killing 20 men to free another shit bag from prison. I’d like to be able to be a good guy who is occasionally forced to do bad things and generally to bad people.

The game is definitely a time sink and isn't built for thirty minute play sessions. You'll probably enjoy it more if you leave it until you have more time to put into it, ST.Simple Torture wrote:Not an issue with the game per se, but how I play video games now just makes this one hard to get into. This is just my life now lol And I don’t want to put it aside since I just learned the controls.zeb wrote:The game is definitely a time sink and isn't built for thirty minute play sessions. This is why the bulk of my gaming these days is stuff like Balatro and Slay the Spire.Simple Torture wrote:Now that I'm out of the introductory section, the game world is really opening up for me, and that's great. Just got to chapter 4: St. Denis. Still less than 40% of the story, which blows my mind. Not likely to play except for weekends for the foreseeable future. We’ll see.

Holy crap that's actually really good progress for this game considering how limited play time is. Are you skipping a lot of the side missions/robberies/stranger encounters?daft twat wrote:Just got to chapter 4: St. Denis. Still less than 40% of the story, which blows my mind. I'm about half way through chapter 4 now but I've been playing about an hour or two per day over holiday break. That all changes tomorrow when I head back to work god dammit. I've been playing slow though and doing ALL the side stuff; I probably skipped about 50% of the side stuff during my first play through in 2018/19.
I was skeptical about whether I'd like Arthur as a character when I saw the first trailers and played through the first story. He easily was one of my fav video game characters ever by the time I finished the story. I actually prefer him a lot more than Marston. I recall having similar thoughts over Ellie's moral integrity through playing TLOU2, though I still loved her as a video game character (Joel and Abby, too)

Yeah, I’m just mainly sticking to the story, and that’s helping me enjoy it more. I’ll occasionally get waylaid by some shit on the side of the road, but I’m not going out of my way to treasure hunt or game hunt or anything like that.Revelator wrote:Holy crap that's actually really good progress for this game considering how limited play time is. Ellie is a good comparison. In both these games, the body count is outrageous. Like I said, I’m short of 40% and I’d say conservatively on missions alone I’ve killed 150 people. How am I supposed to empathize with that? And look, it’s a video game. My favorite 8 bit NES game was Ninja Gaiden. The body count was in the hundreds for sure, but modern day games seek to tell a story and really develop a protagonist. I like that Arthur helps a black doctor get his wagon back or saves a guy from being a sex slave in a gunsmith’s basement, but then he kills a guy just to make stealing a horse easier.
All that said, some of the big set pieces have been a lot of fun. I hope to chip away 10% in each of the next 6 or 7 weekends.

Well it is known colloquially as GTA with horses.daft twat wrote:I like that Arthur helps a black doctor get his wagon back or saves a guy from being a sex slave in a gunsmith’s basement, but then he kills a guy just to make stealing a horse easier.

Re: Red Dead Redemption 2
I have finally gotten to the point, in my scattered play sessions, where I’ve got enough control over the different game systems that I’m just having fun. I’ll do a mission or two per day but I’ll also just do a lot of riding around and taking in the sites, hunting, meeting strangers, etc. I’m only like 13% through the story and am in no rush.
The other day, I did a debt collection mission that brought me to the top of a mountain, and then my horse and I fell down the mountain. Somehow I survived and she died, so I then had to trek down off the mountain by myself and then I spent 10 minutes trying to catch a wild horse but only failing at that so then I had to just shoot a random guy to get his horse. It was great.

Re: Red Dead Redemption 2
The best aspect of the game is that - while the campaign is absolutely enthralling - there's so much other stuff to waylay you.
The first time I stumbled into the Murfree hideout area was one of the most exhilarating moments of gaming I've ever had, and it was well before the story required me to engage with them at all.
Random things I loved doing in this game:
Hunting legendary animals
Blowing up Lemoyne camp sites
Photographing wildlife
Going back to the northern snowy area
Searching for that perfect pelt and unlocking trapper outfits
My #1 piece of advice is avoid rushing through the story. Taking your time is super rewarding.
