You want two CD's worth of (badly mixed and mastered) material?
You're getting 4 half-filled CD's, an EP, a blu-ray and a book bound with sheep scrotums instead, assholes.
Priced accordingly, office reserved for counting more money.
Relatives of former associates with dubious skill are talking to PR agents.
Sock puppet social media accounts will help soften any deserved criticism.
Five Stars, mantle cleared for Grammy awards.

I thought when I created this thread, I'd attract the interest of a few RMers who I knew still listened to CDs and we could discuss finds, releases, and memories in here. Boy was I wrong!

Re: The CD Thread: Still Listen On Disc, Don't Stream
I grew up listening to cassettes, even well into the CD era -- our family didn't have much money growing up and CD's seemed like a luxury above and beyond what we could afford. When I finally got a CD player (not until '94 or '95, I think -- I was about 11), I was blown away by the device's ability to skip straight past songs I didn't want to listen to, as well as the ability to play through a whole album without having to flip something over.E.H. Ruddock wrote:I thought when I created this thread, I'd attract the interest of a few RMers who I knew still listened to CDs and we could discuss finds, releases, and memories in here. My first 5 CD's were, in order: Monster, In Utero, the "Jeremy" single, Core, and the Singles soundtrack. I still have them all, and contrary to what I have read about "disc rot," they all still work fine as far as I know.
Flipping through the CD racks at Wal-Mart is what opened my eyes to the concept of B-sides, soundtrack songs, etc. After discovering Singles, I distinctly remember loitering in the electronics department for like 3 hours and reading the tracklist of every soundtrack and compilation on their shelves, hoping to find something by one of "my bands." I think the only other thing I found was that compilation that had "Pay to Play" by Nirvana on it.
I briefly went through a phase of storing all my CD's in those Case Logic binders, but I've always been a sucker for some good old alphabetical filing and these binders were not conducive to adding new titles to the collection under that system. I switched back to cases on shelves soon after, which is still my preferred method of storage and organization.
I sometimes miss flipping through racks at Best Buy, etc., and sometimes feel sad about the fact that the world no longer has a use for these items that brought us all so much joy once upon a time, not so very long ago. Other times, I find a copy of Ace of Base's "The Sign" at a thrift store for $0.50 and am happy to be the only one who still cares.
I still occasionally troll eBay and Discogs for first-run PJ boots. Last one I got was Berlin 2000, about a year and a half ago, for around $10.

I still have like 500 fucking CDs at least. I listened to maybe 5 in my car all year, the only thing I have that even plays CDs anymore.

When I traded in my last car, I forgot I had put a CD in like a year before. I hope the new owner liked it.

Re: The CD Thread: Still Listen On Disc, Don't Stream
For various reasons I had cause to bring my Mum and Dads old stereo cabinet into my house yesterday, so spent a portion of the evening resetting up my upstairs "listening room".
I had to re-sort out my CDs and was quietly impressed with how many of the things I had. I originally started out thinking I'll set them up allowing space for any future purchases but quickly realised that I really doubt that there will be much in the way of those. I simply don't buy them anymore.
I actually like CD as a format but I know that, for now at least, they aren't something I'm going to seek out as a choice. I'm not about to get rid of my existing discs though.
In fact I now need to buy myself a decent component CD player so I can swap out the annoying $30 player I have. It has no screen to tell me what song is playing or anything and that kinda pisses me off.
The room looks good though and I'm happy with that.

It seems like yesterday when Best Buy had a fuckton of the 2000 tour boots on clearance. There was like half an aisle of them and I made several trips to grab the ones I needed. It was also the premiere place to get the re-pressed Beatles Capitol album box sets without the mastering mistakes. Not long after that, CD's go poof.
How about those record clubs, huh? One of them had the Reprise Jimi Hendrix vault releases on CD for quite a while after they were deleted (which was right after they were released). I guess there was still a contract to press them and they took advantage. Got "Stages" for next to nothing.

Re: The CD Thread: Still Listen On Disc, Don't Stream
Oh man, yes — I still have some of my BMG/Columbia House discs! What a time it was waiting for major mail deliveries in those days pre-USPS tracking. I would send those order forms off and have no idea whether the discs would come in a week or eight months, and would live each day in hope, like that kid in the Christmas Story waiting for his Little Orphan Annie decoder ring, enduring one letdown after another until they finally arrived. I have a weirdly distinct memory of one such package containing a copy of “Ill Communication” arriving on a snow day from school, and playing it while bundled up outdoors with my neighborhood best friend, shooting at random stuff from his basement with a BB gun (which felt like an appropriately obnoxious way to break in a Beastie Boys CD).
No idea how I got all those orders past my parents. They surely would have vetoed any arrangement that had me committing to the purchase of half a dozen CD’s at $21 apiece, just so I could get a box of free ones in the mail.

Re: The CD Thread: Still Listen On Disc, Don't Stream
I have a lot of Pearl Jam and Pearl Jam "related" CDs.
The rest of my CD collection is probably 100-150 discs slowly being replaced by collectible reissues.
I also recently went through my collection to add them all to my spotify library and found several things not on spotify.

Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?
