Funny that Silverchair guy would get a mention today. I've been listening to a bunch of Silverchair. A lot of it is better than I had remembered. Johns has a great voice. His arrangements are decent. But as a guitarist he was a competent riffer at best. He tries to shred in a lot of their live performances and he simply can't.

It worked for Nirvana but by the time Muse came along, the rock power-trio had evolved completely. Serious chops were required in every role.

Honestly understandable.

Kylie had the good sense to collaborate with the mighty Nick Cave.

Natalie dated Silverchair guy.

Point Kylie.

This also happens to be an especially Kylie Minogue-ish Natalie Imbruglia song

Animal Instinct by The Cranberries just started playing and I scrambled to switch the song because I thought a deadlocked man was about to start going "sha la la la laaaa".

Oops. Sorry, Cranberries.

I dunno. The Aussie sex kitten market was pretty stacked back in the day - Kylie, Dannii, Natalie, Delta (puke) and the ridiculously hot Holly Valance, but Kylie will always have a special place in my heart.

I often tell my daughter that I wanted to name her Kylie but her Mum (quite rightfully) vetoed that idea.

silverchair was my first live rock concert in 1996, supported by Ill At Ease-era Mark of Cain.

Imagine a bunch of teenagers wanting to bop to Tomorrow etc and getting served up this first:

I put on Frogstomp every now and again, pretty amazing stuff coming from 16 year olds, even allowing for a decent amount of spiffing up by producers etc.

I mostly just listened to Neon Ballroom and Diorama. Frogstomp is whatever. Obviously very impressive for a bunch of 16-year-olds, but it's nowhere near as good as what followed.

His voice was great, even in their later, poppier stuff. That song Straight Lines remains one of my favorites of theirs.

Fairly certain Neon Ballroom was the first album I ever downloaded and burned to a CD-R.

My teenage crew thought they were completely naff after Freak Show.

I saw them a few times back then.

The 1996 show I mentioned before and twice, I think, in 1997.

If memory serves, Johns had these truly horrendous dreadlocks at the second of the '97 shows:
