The only "weak" part of the track.

With the verses being kind of staccato, rapping style, a SUNG chorus would be been a nicer contrast.

The chorus chord progression is simple- descending, so he could have kept the same melody in general.

I feel the same way about the DM chorus. I actually sing along to it (changing pitch through the words instead of being so monotone) and make it less chanty - to me it's a subtle change that makes it sound much, much better.

The rest of the record does not suffer from these kinds of choruses. Honestly, if these two choruses had just been sung, more than chanted, this would be......the most perfect record ever made???

interesting question. the dm chanting works for me because its a fuller lyrical thought, and feels like it rises to the hugeness of the moment. the R/R chorus feels more at odds/cross purposes with the rest of the song

The R/R chorus is great; the whole song has some built-in silliness to it that doesn't feel forced or stapled onto it, and the chorus feels like it arrives naturally out of that. It's the kind of PJ song that's fun without needing to underline how much fun it's having. It's still the only song that threatens Wreckage as being the best song on the record for me.

I think a line exists, but I would draw it differently. This is not a perfect dichotomy, but I think Ed's writing is at its best when it is reaching for something it can't quite describe and looking to try and capture something undefinable. That's where his most memorable moments come from. When he is targeting something specific/descriptive - whether narratively or philosophically I think he can sometimes run into trouble translating the specificity of experience into something universal.

Prescriptive - that's the word. And I often agree.
