Director-writer David Lynch, who radicalized American film with with a dark, surrealistic artistic vision in films like “Blue Velvet” and “Mulholland Drive” and network television with “Twin Peaks,” has died. He was 78.
Lynch revealed in 2024 that he had been diagnosed with emphysema after a lifetime of smoking, and would likely not be able to leave his house to direct any longer. His family announced his death in a Facebook post, writing, “There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.'”
"There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ … It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.”
Little known fact. David Lynch was booked to direct Star Wars Return of the Jedi. Then the Directors Guild of America stepped in and stopped it. Lucas had been kicked out of the DGA for Star Wars. For not putting the director and cast credits at the start of the film. Lynch would have been expelled for directing the film and breaking union rules.
I got to see Lynch in person at BAM about a decade ago. Today, I'm really just so thrilled and feel so fortunate, beyond words, that I got to have that experience. I don't know... it always feels silly when something like this happens, when someone you've never had a conversation with dies, and there's a visceral emotional reaction. It's so weird. But goddamn...
Today sucks. The world is an even worse place today.... man...
He had incredible taste in women. Hard to believe that if he posted here, he would be banned, have his threads locked, and would be generally looked down on...
You've got Naomi Watts and Lauren Harring on there twice but couldn't be bothered to include Laura Dern, Patricia Arquette, Joan Chen, Peggy Lipton OR Sheryl Lee?!
