I think taking the rest of the catalog into account is not only difficult but kind of a mistake. Ten is singular. And that's okay. I consider Ten to be one of maybe... what like 5? perfect Rock albums. Maybe 15 perfect albums of any genre? I don't know, but it's a massive achievement.

Now that doesn't mean it has to be anyone's favorite. It isn't mine (I have it at #3). But it is, to my ears, undeniable. And, if I'm being totally honest, I think the fact that it's so goddamn good is what makes it hard for people to rank. Because if your tastes usually run counter to it, or if you also really like No Code or Binaural, you feel like there's some kind of cognitive dissonance. But it's that's sort of a weird mind trap. That isn't the case. Both can be true.

There's always a lot of talk about favorite v best and whether or not such a thing exists. And I get all that. Riot Act and Vitalogy speak to me in a way that Ten doesn't. But neither of those are perfect albums. So... *shrugs*

I'm still reacting in a strong emotional way to Dark Matter so it's ranking quite high still. It could be their most consistent set of songs in years.

I think this explains it quite well. Vs. is my favorite PJ record, however if you were to ask me to rank the greatest rock albums of all time, Ten would be on the list, I dont think Vs. would be. Part of me thinks if we were all being really truly honest, Ten should be at the top of everyones list.

This is so good. Probably it's been said here before by him and/or by others, but I've never actually come across those posts. This is A+++.

I don't think PJ has a top 30 album maybe top 50 maybe 2 in the top hundred

Led Zeppelin iv
Dark Side
Back in Black
Are you experienced
Who's next
The River
London Calling
Rumors
High 61
From the big pink
The Wall
Boston
Nevermind
Revolver
Exile on Mainsteet
Joshua Tree
Yellow Brick Road
Pet Sounds
Metallica

I stuck to rock here and this took 20sec . The Police and Cars and Van Halen . debut might be better that 10 I think I could come up with at least 30 more

Don't get me wrong . I prefer Ten to alot of those but those are some of the most important records of all time. Sadly 10 is probably top 10 maybe top 5 album of the last 40 years, but the 70s were stacked.

The Cars debut is probably the closest thing to 10.

Out of the grunge scene in the early nineties, “Ten” is the least grungiest of the albums. It’s almost like a refreshed type of classic rock.

Taking my song averages on the 1-5 scale, and translating them to your scale with appropriate rounding, I get the following current ranking which is sure to get me banned:

10
Ten

9.5
Dark Matter
Gigaton

9
Yield
Vs

8.5
No Code

8
Binaural
Avocado
Riot Act
Lightning Bolt

7.5
Backspacer
Vitalogy

I will freely admit that Lightning Bolt feels too high and Vitalogy feels too low, but there are songs on Vitalogy I just don't connect with, combined with a lot of filler, and while Lightning Bolt never really grabs me (save for Pendulum), it is at least pretty consistent. Like many here, I am curious where Gigaton and Dark Matter will rank for me years in the future. I feel like Gigaton may fall a few spaces, but it is too soon to say with DM.

Binaural at the top and Lightning Bolt at the bottom. Other than that, I don't really know these days.
