Let's use Occam's Razor and see which of these two things is more likely:

Elon Musk, who publicly sided with Israel over Gaza, is actually a Nazi and decided this live broadcast to the entire world was the perfect time to announce it

This purposefully and fundamentally misunderstands the meaning of that gesture to a fascist-favorable audience. It is valued not for its association with antisemitism, but for its associations of power, authoritarianism, and the destruction of one’s enemies.

In a post-1940’s world, if somebody inadvertently Nazi salutes in public and doesn’t promptly rush to say “holy fucking shit you guys, I’m really sorry about that,” you owe them no presumption of goodwill. It is not just the moment but the reaction afterwards that should inform your interpretation.

The difference between “oh wow, you guys… I didn’t really mean it that way, ps nazis fucking suck” and “oh, what, so everybody’s Hitler now? Give me a break” is profound and communicative.

It informs your Occam’s razor.

Absent any indicator that they sure wish it hadn’t looked like a Nazi salute, because kill all Nazis, the actual simplest answer/Occam’s razor version is:

Either the point was to manufacture a reason to do a Nazi salute and then play innocent about it afterwards…

….or it was an actual accident in public, and he’s too stupid or weak to admit he fucked up….even when he has accidentally mimicked a Nazi fucking salute at a political event tied to the presidency.

Personally, I suspect he did it on purpose for trolling reasons (the man is, after all, more interested in being an Internet troll than he is in being successful).

But the fact remains that if a powerful person with significant influence does a Nazi salute at a major political event, and then doesn’t immediately confirm to everybody in the aftermath that, hey, don’t worry, they actually fucking hate Nazis….it is neither the measured nor the rational response to take them at their word.

Or it wasnt a Nazi salute and there is no reason to legitimize that allegation by apologizing for it

Doing it again would not be the same thing as the intent of anyone doing/saying that now could not be separated from a reference to the controversy. The gesture is now memetic and the meaning of the meme is a Nazi reference even though there is no evidence the original act was intended as such.
