Why is RTO such an issue with MAGA? Surely it’s a cheaper option and as long as the work is done, why does it matter where it’s done?

Because there is a perception of "fairness" that they feel has been violated. WFH during the pandemic gave a lot of people a look at a life they will never have again, that tens of thousands of remote feds have been living, and it hardly seems fair that in an era of increasing taxes and trillions in budgets those public servants get to chill at home while those who pay their salaries have to pray traffic lets up in time to get their kids from daycare without a late charge. That's not perceived as 'for the good of the nation'. That's not perceived as 'we are in this together'. That's perceived as an entrenched bureaucracy that only serves itself.

So you are saying they want to make everyone feel fair and welcome?

I'm not sure that follows. Maybe look at it this way; the federal workforce is funded by the private workforce. Maybe it's through taxes or maybe it's through printing/inflation or through fees to a state monopoly (patent office for example). No matter the color of the money, those jobs are a cost to taxpayers and because they are paying for them, taxpayers should have, via their elected officials, the ability to put conditions on them to avoid abuse just as the private sector employers does to their workers. One of those conditions is now "I've seen remote work and you don't get to work remotely anymore on my dime". The entire salaried labor market has been dealing with this for the last few years and it's totally reasonable to expect federal workers have to do it too.

there have been more than enough studies that show people are actually more productive working from home. never mind it cuts down on face to face meetings that could easily be resolved in slack/teams or the dreaded zoom meeting. any RTO that may or may not come down the pike for me is irrelevant since my job pretty much dictates i am in the office to help people out.

The point isn't about productivity. It's about a perception of equity and fairness between the experiences of taxpayers working the private sector and folks in the federal public sector. The idea is that public bureaucracies do not get to use their monopoly power to avoid the realities of the labor market anymore.

I run a business with 4 staff (inclusive of me and my wife). Not having to lease office space for them all saves me money. Additionally, the WFH advantages (no commute etc) makes for far happier employees. And all our work gets done on time.

If you are positioning the citizens of the US as the employers of federal employees I don't see how your argument follows. It's cheaper running staff WFH.
