It could also be the reason Trump is aggressively cutting funding to NGOs.tragabigzanda wrote:Either this or they're even dumber than we thought, and think that "social supports" = immigration and nothing else.McParadigm wrote:Their stated top issues, by historic margins, were the economy and immigration.tragabigzanda wrote:If the "maintaining of relief programs to balance capitalistic inequities is incredibly popular," then why did a majority of voters double down on a chaos administration, of focusing on the middle part?
Post-election polling showed that 72% of Trump supporters said they wanted the federal government to provide fewer social supports. But in the same polls, 77% of those voters opposed any reductions to Social Security. Strong majorities opposed cutting federal funding for Medicaid. A recent post-election Siena poll found that 80% of Americans support increasing SNAP benefit levels, and only 12% support reducing them.
I simply don't think people really expect Donald Trump to do all the things he says he wants to do. Just like they consistently favored candidates who talked about ending the ACA, and then freaked out because those people tried to end the ACA.
I've never understood this, but I accept it because the evidence is always there. Voters were pretty clear that the number one problem they wanted solved was the increasing economic pressure faced by the working class....so they voted for the tariffs and trade wars guy. I suppose my personal suspicion is that they like it when someone is willing to threaten wild, outlandish things, because they mistake those threats for strong-armed negotiation tactics. But we just poured water out of crucial aquifers in our nation's highest producing agricultural sector ahead of a hot summer, because when he says "there's a magic spigot that California could be ending the fires," it's not a negotiation tactic. It's dead serious.

It's not the reason I hope he's cutting NGOs, but then again I don't care to much why he's doing it. I'll take it!

Not sure the existing left-wing order has much fight left in it, and as the public funding for their propaganda is cut off, they are going to have a hard time. But who's to say what will happen in a few years. Undoubtedly new energy will rise up somewhere.

I think the opening playbook is already there in the form of H1Bs competing with the middle class domestic workforce and it would serve as the wedge between Trump and Musk. The left is going to have to drop its intersectionality-uber-alles approach to get there though and that will be a tough pill after nearly two decades being so single threaded

"I want to speak directly to Americans," says Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. "This is a choice that will harm Canadians...but will have real consequences for you."
President Trump's imposition of tariffs violates the free trade agreement they both signed, says the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau.
Better path for President Trump to usher in a Golden Age for America is "to partner with Canada, not punish us,"
White House actions "split us apart instead of bringing us together," says Prime Minister Trudeau, announcing Canada is responding 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of American goods. Canada and Mexico "working together to face these tariffs
"We prefer to solve our differences by diplomacy, but are prepared to fight if it's required," says Canadian Prime Minister after US imposes 25% tariffs.
President Trump has not taken the Canadian prime minister's phone calls since the inauguration, but Justin Trudeau responds to reporters that "I hope to speak with him sometime soon."
Americans need Canada's natural gas, oil, minerals, automotive parts, cement and soft lumber and the 25% tariffs will hurt Americans, predicts Prime Minister Trudeau. "We will use all the tools at our disposal. ...The Americans have placed us in this situation."
