Very different for me!

For better or worse, these guys were like my Monkees or Beatles at a very impressionable age.

Three strong, very identifiable personalities.

They just seemed more interesting, funny and articulate than many of their peers. I still feel that way now, more or less.

It's funny, I never once connected with the personalities of the people in Nirvana. Different varieties of asshole, IMO. Some good songs though.

My emotional response to the band has nothing to do with how I perceive them as individuals.

But the different mixes of an album that I think sounds fine (even if it’s PJ) fall into the “do not care” bucket for me.

I very much agree with this in regards to modern remixes of old albums, which often feel like cash-grabby attempts to get people to re-buy albums they already own. Occasionally they're cool but most of the time I have no interest.

I do enjoy vintage alternate mixes though, just because a lot of them have cool/weird stories behind them and I find it fun to dig into stuff like that.

It's also the only Nirvana deluxe set that actually *sounds good* and you get all of the original mixes that apply to the album's sordid history in that quality.

The rest of the deluxe sets (and rarities sets and live releases) suck ass not only sonically, but in the research department too.

That's what happens when the band themselves can't be bothered and defers to management.

Albini saved the day.

regarding the 20th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition

I did a little side-by-side listen of the Disc 1 (1993 Albini) v. Disc 2 (2013 mix overseen by Albini)

I think I like the Disc 2 better

But will do this more than once

part of this may have to do with my own failing hearing in my right ear, which feels like sometimes i have good days and bad days

but the Disc 2 feels clearer and the drums feel deeper and punchier and i like both of those things

(now's the part where someone tells me that sonically the drums are identical on both)
