There's no money to be made on record sales, why promote it and spend more money? The touring is obviously where the money is now. PJ has a fan base that will sell out (for now) whether the general public know about a new record or not. And they also know that their fanbase is willing to pay increasingly high prices to see them.joostone wrote:https://chartmasters.org/pearl-jam-albu ... ngs-sales/
Ok, they didn't promote Gigaton a whole lot. No interviews, not a lot of press, no TV performances and not even a Netflix special.
But okay, Covid got in its way.
Flash forward to 2024. They release their best (according to fans) record in years and..... that's it. Their worst selling record of all time, by far! . Two interviews and a podcast? Again not a lot of interviews in Magazines, no TV performances, not many physical releases of singles (with b-sides that generate some buzz), no promotional videos, only a handful shows in Europe, as of now only one leg of touring is planned for 2025.
Whenever the Peppers, FF, Qotsa, Green Day or Metallica has a new record out everybody seems to know. They actually promote their shit.

PJ might have had a dip in album sales, but they can still pack arenas.
Keep on rockin’ in the free world.

it was/is their most successful album from a singles charting perspective in decades which makes the album sales stats kind of oddtragabigzanda wrote:Or, and hear me out... I'd be interested in seeing a comparison that took into account overall industry shrinkage

Re: 13th album rumors and speculation
Context. People don’t buy music any more. Aside from cult fan bases like this one, most of the world accesses music via streaming platforms. You’ll simply never be able to make an apples to apples comparison with the early 90s. Impossible to extrapolate likely sales based on streams.stip wrote:it was/is their most successful album from a singles charting perspective in decades which makes the album sales stats kind of oddtragabigzanda wrote:Or, and hear me out... The better indicator to me is now critical acclaim. Seems like music journalists mostly recognized this album for what it was: a stunningly strong effort rarely seen from bands this far in.

I definitely wouldn't rely on critical acclaim either.

Ok. So what’s your metric then ?BurtReynolds wrote:I definitely wouldn't rely on critical acclaim either.

Re: 13th album rumors and speculation
I think the net impact of the records are about the same, though -- important to fans of the band, maybe of some passing interest to people who follow new releases in general, but not especially relevant to anyone else. Whatever the sales/streaming numbers of these records are, differences between them seem pretty academic, especially given how unreliably these numbers actually track engagement.joostone wrote:Whenever the Peppers, FF, Qotsa, Green Day or Metallica has a new record out everybody seems to know. Beyond that, though -- and maybe I am oversimplifying things -- wouldn't Dark Matter naturally be at a disadvantage on a cumulative sales/streaming chart just by being the newest record?

Re: 13th album rumors and speculation
You are underestimating the impact of a good music video and its potential to go viral. In the past, the fight was to capture attention on MTV; now, it should be the same on social media.
You need to hook people on Instagram so it translates into a ticket sold.
But again, they couldnt care less about those things.
